“Mr Neilson?”

“Kelley, can you tell Quinn he’s to take over for now and for the rest of the day. Let everyone know that if they need to contact me it needs to be done via text or email. I will not be answering any phone calls.”

“Is everything okay Sir?” the concern obvious in her voice.

“I’m needed by someone who is unwell. Like I said no phone calls, that include you, Kelley.”

“Of course, Sir. What about tomorrow?” she asks.

“I will let you know by six AM what to expect.”

“Yes Sir. I will send out an email now.”

“Thank you, Kelley. I will email you in a bit with everything that Quinn needs to ask the contractors for.” I hang up and put my phone on silent before putting it into my trouser pocket and walking back into the bedroom where Sadie still hasn’t moved. I look at the floor and see that she has managed to change out of her summer dress at some point. I quickly pick it up before squatting down in front of her.

“The sick bowl is clean and, on the floor, down here. I’m going to get you some fresh water and then you are going to take more tablets and get some rest,” I say before leaving the room and returning to the kitchen.

Whilst I’m there I check and clean out Binx’s litter tray and refill his bowls. I have no idea how much he eats but I’m sure he won’t complain if I give him too much. He must hear me as he rushes down the stairs and heads straight for his bowls as soon as I place them on the floor.

“You hungry boy?” I whisper as I scratch him behind the ears. Grabbing two fresh bottles of water from the fridge I head up the stairs to find Sadie looking up at me from the bed.

“You need to rest.”

“I need to check if Binx has everything.”

“I’ve already taken care of everything he needs. I also gave him some food before I left yesterday as well so he hasn’t been starved.”

“Thank you,” Sadie whispers before she starts chewing on her lips nervously again. I squat down so I am at eye level with her and run my hand over her head.

“What do you need? Just ask and I will get it.”

“Will you stay with me?” she asks quietly.

“I already said I would sweetheart. I’m not leaving you until I know you are okay. I’ll just be in the chair there.”

“Can you sit here on the bed?” she adds. I give her a smile and nod.

“If that’s what you want. Scoot up.”

Sadie moves across the bed a little and I kick off my shoes before climbing on with her. I sit with my back against the headboard and my legs stretched out in front of me.

“Come here,” I whisper as Sadie places her head on my lap. I start running my hand over her head softly as she gets comfortable. “Anything you need from me, don’t be worried about asking. If I can get it for you I will, okay?” I whisper as I continue to run my hand over her head.

“Thank you,” I hear her reply softly. “I’m more tired than anything now,” She admits. I smile to myself as I look down at the back of her head.

“Then sleep, sweetheart. If you feel up to it later, I will make you something to eat, okay?” Sadie nods as she slowly drifts back off to sleep and I start working from my phone as I stroke her head and keep an eye on her.

Chapter eight

Sadie

I wake up to the feeling of someone stroking my head and a hard thigh against my cheek. For a moment I lie quietly and allow myself to enjoy the feeling of someone caring for me. I’m sure it won’t happen again. There’s no way Jayden will stick around now he has seen what I can get like. I know I’m just in some stained joggers and a baggy t-shirt and look like a tramp, and he saw that I had been sick in the bowl. Please ground, swallow me up and hide me.

“You okay there, sweetheart?”

“No,” I croak too embarrassed to turn to face him.

“What do you need?” Jayden asks as his hand stills on my head.
