“Ooh! Gimme, gimme!” She grabs the bag out of my hand and drags the sandwich out, groaning. “Ohh. I love Flaherty’s! They make the best subs.”

She dances down the hallway and into the kitchen to get a plate. “Why do you need a plate? It’s got a wrapper,” I ask her, confused.

She stops and stares at me. “You’re a caveman. Seriously. You use a plate like a civilized human being. Even if it’s paper.”

“Sorry. I was unaware of the rules for sandwiches.”

She finishes her dinner and then sits back. Her eyes search mine. “Where were you all day?”

“At work.” I answer shortly, still thinking about Daffy’s gorgeous face and body under me.

“I thought you didn’t have to work today.”

“I didn’t. I got called in for a special job though. Woman had her lights taken out in her shop. You know her actually.”

“Who?” She asks me, her eyes widening.

“Daffy.”

“At the pottery studio? What happened?” She asks me.

“A squirrel ate some of her wiring.”

Her eyes widen and she snickers. “A squirrel? Oh my gosh! How cute!”

“Not so cute if it causes a fire from stripped wires.”

She pouts and her grey eyes darken. “That’s not funny.”

“It’s not meant to be funny. It’s a serious thing and it can absolutely cause a fire.”

“You’re always so damn serious.”

“Watch the language, sis. You’re too young to talk like that.”

She rolls her eyes and stands up. “Yeah. Because we both know that you never used that kind of language when you were my age. Please.” She stomps away and up the stairs. “I’m going to bed.”

“I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Uh-huh.” The door slams and I’m once again alone. It seems like that’s how I spend most of my time anymore. I can’t date because I need to watch my sister but all she does is slam the door in my face and hide out in her room.

“I have no life,” I grumble and stand to throw away the trash and then head up to my bedroom to grab a quick shower.

The hot spray comes down on my head like sharp needles. I’m so wound up and sensitive that I can’t stop thinking about her. Daffy.

What a damn stupid name for a beautiful woman. Daffy! Please.I snort and lean against the wall, my head on my bicep, my dick throbbing like a motherfucker.

Stupid name. Beautiful woman. Smart, sexy, sweet and just all-around tempting. Like having a dish of candy dropped in front of you that you can’t touch.

I did touch her though and she was so softly-curved under my hands. Her skin glowed in the overhead lights and her lips were lush and dark pink from my kisses. Her blond hair was tousled around her head and her eyes…fuck, her eyes. Deep blue and desperate for my touch. She was so freaking responsive wherever my hands landed. I couldn’t stop touching her.

Until that damn phone rang. I still don’t know whether it was a blessing or a curse. I cannot get involved with a woman right now. My sister’s problems are dragging at me, weighing me down like an anchor. I feel like I’m about to blow half the damn time and I need something.

But I’ve never felt lonely until I left her lying there on that table, her cheeks flushed and her slumberous eyes full of desire.

When I left her there, I felt alone and unwanted. Unnecessary. Single. Solitary. There were so many words for aching, numbing aloneness.

And not one of them made me feel better for doing what I had to do. I still wanted her, my body still throbbed and burned with desire.
