She crossed her arms over her chest. “But if I were a lesbian or bi or pan, you would give me more room to breathe! Why would me having a girlfriend be more acceptable than me wanting to go to a party to see the boy I like?”

“Because…” He trailed off without a ready argument. He turned to his father and father-in-law. “Help?”

Liam threw his hands in the air. “She’s got you by the balls there, boy. I’m out.”

“Let’s let her go.” Axton gave in after a brief hesitation. “Just for a little while.”

“Are you insane?” Cannon bellowed at his dad.

“What are you so scared of son?” Ax asked with a smirk. “That she’ll meet a boy who is just like you?”

“Fuck yeah, that’s what I’m scared of. It gives me night sweats.”

Laughing, the older men slapped him on the back, and I gave Danica a little squeeze. “How about I help you get ready for this party?”

She watched as her grandfathers ribbed her dad then nodded. “I just want to have fun, Nonna. I’m not going to have sex or anything.”

“Of course you’re not, my sweet girl. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to go out with your friends. Your dad is just scared.”

Danica frowned as we walked upstairs to her bedroom. “What’s there to be scared of?”

“When you have children, you’re scared of everything, my dearest heart.” I stroked my hand over her long, dark hair, my heart aching as I looked down at her. She looked so much like Piper, except for her eyes and those damned dimples. Looking at her was torture at times, especially now that she was getting older, and her personality turned more and more into my daughter.

I was putting the finishing touches on Danica’s makeup when Piper appeared in the doorway. “I heard there was a lot of commotion here today.”

“Nonna had my back,” Danica said with a bright smile for her mom.

“Yeah, she’s kick-ass like that.” Piper pulled Danica into her arms, being careful not to muss her. “Have fun but be home by midnight.”

“A curfew?” she whined. “That’s so lame, Mom.”

“You’re fifteen. We can renegotiate terms and conditions as you get older.” Leaning back, she gave her child the look. “Or you can change into your pajamas and come downstairs and have a movie marathon with your dad and me.”

“Fine,” Danica grumbled. “I’ll be home by midnight.”

“Great. Go on, your ride just pulled up, and I doubt you want your dad or either of your grandfathers to scare them away.”

Yelping, she kissed my cheek then her mom’s, before running down the stairs. I watched her go, remembering Piper at that age. It wasn’t that I thought Cannon shouldn’t be worried. Fuck, there were plenty of reasons for him to be scared shitless. But I trusted Danica to make the right choices. Her parents had done a great job of raising her, and she had a good head on her shoulders.

My one and only grandchild knew what she was doing.

Piper and Cannon might feel like they didn’t have a clue at times, but from where I was standing, I could see what amazing parents they’d become.
