“Baby, we are old.”

I elbowed him in the ribs. “Shut up, you.”

“We might be old, but you’re still as beautiful as the day I met you.” Dropping a kiss on my lips, he let his hand fall to my ass and squeeze. Breathless, I blinked up at him when he lifted his head. Even after all these years, he could still make me weak in the knees with just a kiss. “Come on, babe. Poppy’s going to win you the biggest bear at this carnival.”

“Dad!”

Shane groaned at the sound of Mason’s voice yelling through our bedroom door. Thankfully, it was locked, or our grown son would have walked in on something that would have required therapy.

I squirmed beneath my husband, displeased he’d paused mid-pump. “Ignore him,” I hissed. “He’ll go away.”

“Bossy,” he said with a predatory grin down at me and shifted his hips again, making me have to press my lips together to keep from whimpering in pleasure.

“I know you two are fooling around in there!” Mason shouted. “I just thought you would want to know that Vi texted that she’s in labor!”

“Fuck!” Shane groaned. “Two minutes.”

“Five!” I yelled back. “Five minutes and then we’ll be downstairs.”

“You two are such freaks,” I heard our son grumble as he stomped away.

Twenty minutes later, we were dressed and had mostly caught our breath as we went downstairs. Violet and Luca were in town for the off-season. Her C-section was scheduled for the following week, but with as much as her stomach had dropped over the last few days, it didn’t surprise me that she’d gone into labor early.

When we got to the hospital, Luca was already gowned up, and they were ready to take Vi into surgery. We only had enough time to kiss them both before she was wheeled into the OR to deliver our second set of twin grandsons.

Love Bug, Ethan, and Elijah were already in the waiting room with Brady when we entered. Our three other grandchildren rushed us for hugs, telling us the exciting story of how Mommy’s water broke and Daddy’s freak-out.

“It was kind of scary,” Love Bug said, sucking her bottom lip between her teeth much like her mother did when she was stressed. “One minute, we were making cookies in the kitchen with Mrs. Briggs. The next, Mom screamed, and there was all this water all over the floor. Daddy started shouting to get in the car because Aidan and Ciarán were coming early.”

I hugged her close, trying not to show her my own fear for her mother. “It’s okay, Love. Daddy won’t let anything happen to your mom.”

“I know,” she whispered. “But she kept leaking all the way here. And crying. She was in so much pain. And—”

I kissed the top of her head. “Shh,” I soothed when she started crying. “Everything will be fine. I promise.”

Not long after our arrival, Layla and Jesse joined us with Emmie and Nik. Soon, the waiting room began to fill up so much that there were no seats left. Layla and I stayed with Love Bug, reassuring her repeatedly that all was well. Violet was going to be fine.

She had to be.

Almost a full hour passed before Luca walked into the room. All three of his children swarmed him. “Is Mommy okay?” Ethan demanded.

“How are the babies?” Elijah wanted to know.

“Can we see Mom?” Love Bug demanded. “I need to see Mom!”

He crouched down and pulled all three of them close. “The babies are fine. Everything went great. And Mom is still in recovery, but she’s good too.”

“I want to see her.”

He hugged Love Bug to him. “I promise, she’s fine. She just needs a little time to recover from having the babies before you can visit with her. As soon as she’s feeling better, GiGi and Gammy will take you in to see her.”

“Why not you?” she whispered, her chin wobbling.

“Because your grandmothers will want to see her first, and if you want to get in there sooner, that’s the only way.” He pushed her hair back from her face. “Have I ever lied to you, Bug?”

She shook her head as a tear fell down her face.
