“Yep. I slept really well last night. I f-feel pretty great this morning actually,” I assured him. “I’m heading to Dad’s offices with him later on. He’s g-going to show me around.”

“Your dad will love that. I guess we better get started then so you can get home.” Dec was smiling as he released his hold on me to push the door to our training room open.

“I’m p-pretty excited to see where he works to be honest,” I confessed. “Plus he said we c-can go for lunch together. It’ll be nice to spend so…” I stopped talking and looked up at the sound of a strange grunt from Declan. I was midway through the doorway which he had been holding open for me and looked up just in time to catch the heavy door from slamming into my shoulder. I pushed it open and hurried inside, worried Declan had maybe tripped and hurt himself.

“Declan!” I cried when I saw him laid on his side with his back to me, just inside the door. I hurried over and crouched next to him but before I could touch him I sensed movement behind me. I turned quickly, terrified, but relaxed when I saw it was just Fiona.

“Oh, Fiona,” I sighed. “Did you see what happened? Did he trip?” I asked as I bent down low so I could see if Declan’s eyes were open. He moaned a little and I was relieved to see his eyes were fluttering.

“No,” Fiona said as she stepped forward until she was right behind Declan. “He didn’t trip,” she added as she leaned over and held out a small box like device in her hand for me to see.

“What’s that? What’s g-going on?” I asked as I glanced up and saw a look on her face I had never seen from her before. I instantly felt my adrenaline spike, my body sensing impending danger before my brain could catch up.

“I tried to do this the easy way,” she went on, as though I hadn’t even spoken. “I tried to keep him out of it, but you wouldn’t just go quietly and now you’ve left me no choice.” Before I could question her or even attempt to make sense of her words, she pressed a little switch on the box and as it came to life in her hand, small sparks appearing at one end of it, I realised what it was. A Taser.

“NO!” I screamed as she pressed it into Declan’s side hard. He grunted again as his whole body went rigid and shook a little. I moved to throw myself at her, to make her stop as she continued to hold the device against Declan’s side, but froze in place when she raised her free hand and pointed a small hand gun right at me.

“Don’t move,” she warned.

“Just st-stop hurting him!” I cried, praying Luca had heard me calling out, but I knew the chances were slim. There were three closed sets of fire doors between where he and Lewis were waiting and where we were.

“It won’t kill him. It will just knock him out,” she assured me, like that made what she was doing to him any better.

“Please Fiona,” I begged as tears swam in my eyes. “Why are y-you doing this?”

Finally she pulled the Taser away from Declan’s body and his taut muscles relaxed as he slumped down. I was pretty sure he was unconscious. At least I hoped that was all it was. For all I knew she could have just pumped enough electricity through him to mess with his heart.

“Because…” she began as she got to her feet and rounded Declan to come towards me. I stood too, preparing myself for any opening to take her out. I had no idea what was going on or why she was doing this, but I knew I needed to do whatever it took to stop her from hurting Declan any further. She stopped opposite me, the gun still held on me with one hand as the Taser in the other continued to make a low humming sound. “…Declan is mine,” she growled, then before I could react or even think, she moved her right hand and smashed the gun into the side of my head so hard I instantly dropped to my knees. As the ground below me blurred, I could feel the familiar, warm trickle of blood running down the side of my face. I tried to look to Declan again, but before I could make my pounding head cooperate I felt a second blow in the same spot at the side of my head. As the floor grew closer and closer to my face, everything faded and went black.

“Blake? Blake? I need you to wake up for me.” I heard a voice pulling me from the darkness. I kept my eyes closed as I came back to consciousness, a habit learned during my childhood, to always check my surroundings for a moment or two before I opened my eyes. I had stopped doing it in the weeks I had been living with Dad and Trent, but the pain pounding through my head had me wary this time.

The right side of my face felt swollen and there was a very familiar sensation of my skin around there feeling stiff, which I knew meant it was covered with dried blood. I was sitting in a hard chair, but when I tried to subtly move a hand, I realised I was restrained in some way.

“Blake?” The voice hissed again and I realised it was Declan. My eyes snapped open at that thought and I looked all around me for him, as I recalled him laid out unconscious.

“Dec!” I gasped as my eyes met his. His skin was pale and a sheen of sweat was visible on his forehead. “Where are we?” I asked as I looked down and confirmed what I had feared – my hands were tied to the arms of a wooden chair. I was before a rectangular wooden table and Declan was in a chair opposite me.

“We’re in the basement of the gym,” he replied, his voice sounding a little strained and hoarse.

“The basement? How d-did she get us down here?”

“Dragged us I’m guessing. I feel bruised to fuck,” he grumbled and I realised when I thought about it, my whole body was feeling pretty bruised and battered too.

“Can you get your hands free? I tried but I can barely fucking move. I think she fucking Tasered me,” he growled.

“She d-did. Where is she?” I asked as I once again looked around the space we were in. It was a lot like the room Dec and I worked out in, with plain walls and a shiny grey floor, only down here there were no windows and no equipment.

I remembered Dec telling me he was working on creating more private spaces for personal training in the basement and guessed this was one of them.

“Don’t know,” he shrugged. “She was gone when I came around. Your head? It looks bad.”

“She hit me with the gun, b-but I…I’m okay. I’ve had worse.”

“That’s not fucking reassuring, Blake,” he grumbled.

“We have to g-get out of here. She’s bloody nuts.” I started to pull on the ropes tied around my wrists, knowing just how desperately we needed to get out of there before she came back. “It was her,” I realised aloud as I worked to loosen the restraint. “It makes s-sense when I think about it. I’m such a fucking idiot!”
