I make my way to Maggie.
“Did you tell them?” she asks when I walk back to her.
“No.”
“What did you tell them?”
I sit down beside her. “Nothing more than I said in front of you. It’s a work issue. You called me because we are friends.”
“And they believed you?” She’s blinking back tears again.
“No.”
She rubs her forehead.
I lay a hand on her back and say, “But they promised to keep it to themselves.”
“I want to go home,” she says. I stand up and take her hand.
When we get back to her apartment, I say, “What do you need?”
Her eyes look flat and dull. “I want to be alone.”
I nod toward my apartment. “I’ll stick around my place. Just text and I’ll come over if you need company.”
She doesn’t even acknowledge what I just said. She walks toward her bedroom without turning back.

Declan: You okay? Haven’t heard anything from you in a day. Do you need anything?
Maggie:
Declan: Maggie? Please answer.
Maggie:
Declan: I’m getting worried. Don’t make me break down your door.
Maggie: I don’t need anything.
Declan: Okay.

Maggie: I’m not hungry.
Declan: Please let me come over. I’m really worried.
Maggie: I’m not ready to see you.
Declan: Do you want me to call someone else? Would you want to see Elizabeth or Celeste?
Maggie: no! God, no!
