Declan: Okay, fine. I’m across the hall when you change your mind.

Three Days Later

Declan: Have you been out of your apartment at all this week?

Maggie: No.

Declan: Mags, please let me come over. I’m really worried.

Maggie: You can come over Saturday.

Declan: Can I bring lunch or dinner?

Maggie: Lunch is fine.

Declan: Anything sound good.

Maggie: No. Just bring whatever sounds good to you.

Chapter Thirty-Five

Declan

As soon as I step intoher apartment, I notice the flowers I sent her earlier this week are in the trash. Not because they are dead – just because she hated them, I guess. She catches me staring at them.

“Sorry,” she mumbles and then shakes her head. “I shouldn’t have thrown them away. That was rude.”

“I was just trying to cheer you up,” I say.

She looks over at the trash can and says, “They just looked so alive and cheery. It felt like they were mocking me.”

She flicks her eyes over to me, “Sorry.”

I let out a little sigh. “It’s fine, Maggie.”

She nods over to the table. I place the takeout bag on the counter and then we sit down across from each other. A file folder sits in the center of the table.
