“Your grandparents took me in and helped me get a fresh start. I’m forever indebted to them. They were good people.”

A sigh escaped between her lips and she shook her head. “Oh, how I wish I’d learned about them sooner. I wonder why they never contacted me.”

There was so much she didn’t understand and know about their community, and Preston could just bet that her father leaving may have something to do with what went on here. Most of them accepted and thought nothing about it, but occasionally, someone would object and if her father was a prude, then he would want nothing to do with Blessing.

“If you go to town, let us know. We usually try to pick things up at the grocery store whenever someone makes a trip in,” Preston told her.

Her brows raised and she gave a little laugh. “I know. I learned that yesterday.”

Colby smiled at her. “Small town with very few available women.”

“Not my problem,” she said, giving him a glare. “No, I think I’ll contact someone and get them to install internet and television while I’m here. Surely someone has a short-term plan.”

The two men glanced at one another and Preston knew Colby was responding to the wordsshort-term.

“What are your plans for the day?” Preston asked.

“We’d like to take you horseback riding around the ranch,” Colby said. “Show you the land you now own.”

A frown appeared on her face. “I’ve got to find internet first. Whether that means someone comes out and puts it in the house or I have to go to town. Plus, I’ve ridden a horse only twice.”

They both grinned.

“Well, you know the basics then. We can teach you the rest.”

She nodded. “Today, I’d like to spend some time in the house, snooping. Trying to find out more about my grandparents. Get the internet hooked up and rest. Could we go tomorrow?”

“All right,” Preston said, thinking he could understand her wanting to learn about her family. “There is a lady in town who is kind of an expert on all the families in this area. Her name is Granny Jones. We thought she would be a good person for you to speak with and learn about your family.”

It was all he could do not to saywhy your family broke up.

“Also, my sister is getting married this Saturday night. It would be a good time for you to meet the people in town,” he said.

A deep furrow appeared on her forehead. “Oh no, I could not intrude.”

“You wouldn’t be intruding, you would be getting to know the people in this town. The other families. Maybe someone besides Granny Jones could tell you about your grandparents. Your father. I bet my father went to school with him.”

A butterfly darted in the flowers that graced the porch flowerbed and Preston heard a bee nearby, sipping the abundant nectar.

“You’re sure your sister wouldn’t mind me attending? I mean I’m sure by now her guest list is filled.”

He laughed. “Weddings here aren’t that formal. The ceremony is outside under the trees and then we’re serving barbecue. There will be a rodeo and a dance afterward. By eight o’clock that night, the newlyweds will take off on their honeymoon and the party will continue without them.”

Preston wanted her to attend. He wanted her to learn about their ways and the closeness of their community. The way everyone worked together and looked out for one another.

“All right,” she said. “It sounds like fun. What should I wear?”

“A nice dress,” he told her.

“Are you going?” she asked Colby.

“Wouldn’t miss it,” he said.

Preston knew Colby couldn’t wait to see her reaction to their way of life. And he also planned on riding in the rodeo. The man liked danger. And he’d taken to training wild horses.

“We’ll all three go together,” Preston said.

“All right,” she said.
