“Oh shit! What the hell now?” I groan and throw my leg over, stepping off of Rusty and leading him to the barn. One of the younger guys shows up and grins at me.

“Dude! I didn’t know that your sister could ride!”

“Oh shit!” I swear to god, my heart actually dropped all the way down to the ground. “Can you get Rusty cleaned up and put away?”

He smirked at me. “Sure, man. Hope your sister isn’t leaving too soon. She’s a lot of fun.”

I grimaced. “Yeah. She’s a hoot.”

When I make it to the corral, it’s just in time to see my younger sister, the middle one, trotting around the fence line, working her heels in the horse’s side and showing off.

“Dammit, Tallulah! What the hell are you doing here?”

She turns her head back to me and I shiver when I think about taking her attention off the horse. Dexter isn’t an easy horse to ride sometimes. He’s known for getting a wild hair and bucking a rider off with no warning.

Dexter snorts and I see his ears go back. “Shit! Get the hell off that horse!” I holler.

It’s too late. Dexter’s neck goes down and his ass goes straight up in the air, kicking behind him. Tallulah grits her teeth and her blue eyes sparkle with determination. She sits low in the saddle and tries to think ahead of what Dexter is going to do.

And it works. For at least thirty seconds. And then she whoops as Dexter gets her off his back in a big way.

I pale and run in the corral, shooing him away with my hat. “Ha! Come on, buddy! Let’s go! Get your ass over there!’

I push him away from Tallulah as she gets shakily to her feet. She stumbles over to the fence and leans against it, grinning and rubbing at her ass.

“Shit! That hurt!” She laughs.

I run up and hug her, lifting her off the ground and smiling when she laughs at me. “So what the hell were you doing on that horse?”

She groans. “I will never take another bet again.” She turns to the railing and pulls away from me, making her way over to one of our new hires, Jackson. “But for right now…you owe me fifty bucks!”

I shake my head, brushing my hat off on my dusty jeans. “Are you telling me you got on that horse because of fifty dollars?”

She shakes her red head, grimacing. “Nope. I got on it because of the bet. The fifty bucks is just a bonus.”

“Ugh! What are you doing here?” I grumble.

“I’m here to have you sign those papers for Rebel. She’s got a lead on someone to sell that old property of Dad’s to. You know that land that floods?”

I glare at her. “You can’t sell that to some poor unsuspecting sucker.”

“He already knows. He wants to build a cabin and he’s got some idea on how to fix that area of the creek that floods.”

“That’s crazy! He ought to just buy a different property.”

“She tried to talk him out of it but he’s pretty persistent. It’s actually pretty funny. The two of them are something else to see. They get along like oil and water. So not at all.”

“Okay. As long as he knows,” I say, mollified.

“He does. He wants to get possession of the land by the fourth.”

“That’s not very far away. Hope she knows what she’s doing.”

“She does. He’s a guy that works for Wildwood Construction. Mr. July in fact.”

My eyebrows lift and I stare at her. “What the hell?”

“I can’t explain it. Just google the calendar.”
