I tried to stand so I could fight whoever it was, but I didn’t need to.

From behind us, I saw Dane run up, practically throwing himself at the man, knocking the man and his weapon to the curb. They struggled on the ground, but soon, Dane had the man on his belly, his arm twisted up in a painful position behind his back.

The van screeched its tires and tried to drive off. It careened wildly, tires spinning, and crashed into a parked car across the street.

The driver, a young man wearing a black ski mask, got out and ran down the street.

“Hey!” I shouted but the man ran down a side alley and as gone.

“Get the gun,” Dane said and nodded towards it. I bent down and picked it up, making sure the safety was on. “Call 9-1-1,” Dane added, cool as a cucumber, even as he held my attacker down. “Tell them to send police. You’re injured.”

I grabbed a tissue from my jacket pocket and pressed it against my forehead. “I’ll be fine. Just need a couple of stitches. I can go to the ER and get taken care of.”

I took out my cell and dialled 9-1-1, my hands shaking slightly. I spoke with the operator, said we needed police to respond, and then gave her my details. While we waited, George ran up, having abandoned the limo when he saw what happened. A crowd of onlookers stood by, watching us.

“Dr. Morgan,” George said, bending down beside Dane. “You should have waited…”

“I know, I know,” I said, shaking my head, one hand holding the tissue to my temple. “I figured it was only two blocks.”

“You’re injured,” George said and came over. He bent down and glanced at my cut. “You need stitches. Then he turned back to Dane, who was still on top of my attacker, restraining him. “I have some cuffs.” George pulled out some handcuffs, and together, the two worked together to cuff the man while we waited for police.

George turned to Dane. “You got some skills. You former police?”

“Army,” Dane replied. “Combat medic.”

“Good man,” George said, and I could see the admiration in his eyes. “Glad you were here.”

“Drake told me about the threat, so I watched him walking towards the limo. I saw the man step out from behind the van, and I knew it wasn’t good. Training kicked in. I took him out. The driver of the van crashed the vehicle and ran down a side street.”

George glanced over at the crashed van. “They really cocked it up. Drake’s lucky you were here. Good man,” George said again, shaking his head in admiration. He turned to me. “I think you own this man a drink.”

“More than a drink,” I said with a rueful laugh.

George turned the man over onto his back and pulled away the mask. “Do you recognize him?

I came over and looked at his face more carefully. It was hard to say. He had a thick beard and bushy eyebrows. He appeared to be in his fifties or early sixties.

He spit at me.

“You fucking bastard,” he finally said. “You won’t escape justice.”

“Who are you?” I asked, stepping back. “What do you want from me?”

“You destroyed my daughter,” he said, acid in his voice. “You’re lucky I didn’t takeyourdaughter the day I saw her at the park.”

I destroyed his daughter? My mind whirled for a moment, trying to think of what I might have done to destroy this man’s daughter. Was she a patient who had a bad outcome from surgery?

“What’s your name?” I asked again, wracking my brain for anyone who had complained in the past, but there was no one I could think of.

He refused to answer. At that point, Dane reached into the man’s pocket and removed his wallet. He glanced at the driver’s license “Terrence Monroe.”

“Monroe?” I said and then it hit me. He was Lisa Monroe’s father…

That meant that the driver of the van might be Lisa’s half-brother, but he was supposed to still be in prison. If so, he must have been released from prison, where he was serving a short sentence for his threats against me. But if he was released, it was early…

“I didn’t destroy your daughter,” I said firmly, disgust filling me. “She did that all by herself.”

“It was because of you,” Mr. Monroe replied, his voice emotional. “She told me that you abused her and raped her. Brainwashed her into this BDSM cult of yours. If you hadn’t done that, she’d still be free…”
