It must be the story Lisa told her father to manipulate him and remove her own culpability.

“I’m sorry, but you’re wrong. I never abused or raped your daughter. She did everything willingly and signed consent forms to that effect. She’s a liar and will say anything to deflect responsibility away from her, but she was the one who convinced Jones to kill himself. He was Lisa’s submissive partner. He killed Richardson at her request. She was the brains behind it all.”

“Liar,” Monroe hissed. He turned away, like he couldn’t stand to hear the truth.

I shook my head and glanced at George. In the distance, we heard a siren approach.

“The police are here,” George said. “They’ll want to take us all down to the precinct and get statements. After you get your cut treated.”

“I better call Kate and let her know.” I turned to Dane. “I’m sorry to prevent you from getting your noodles. Tell you what, when we’re done, I’ll buy you dinner. I’ll buy both of your dinners.”

“Sounds like a deal,” Dane said.

I sat on the curb and called Kate while I waited for the police to arrive.

It was going to be a long night…

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Drake called while I was watching the evening news, Sophia sitting at the coffee table, playing with her Lego characters. He was due home soon, and I was thinking about what to order in for our supper.

“Hey,” I said, smiling when I heard his voice. “What’s up? Are you going to pick up something for supper on the way home?”

“Well, not really. Listen, I’m calling because there was a security incident, and I have to go to the police and give a formal statement. You’re probably going to have to order room service for you and Sophie, because it will probably be a couple of hours.”

“What happened?”

For the next few moments, Drake described the attempted abduction by Lisa Monroe’s father, and how it was him behind the threatening letters sent to us.

He wanted to punish Drake for what he thought Drake did to Lisa…

Of course, Drake did nothing to Lisa that she didn’t agree to, and in fact, it was Lisa who was obsessed with Drake. Not the other way around.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, my pulse rate increased at the thought that he’d been in danger. “He had a gun?”

“Yes,” Drake said. “Luckily, my colleague Dane was watching out for me and jumped Monroe, took him down and subdued him. Meanwhile, I hit my head on the door and was stunned for a moment or two.”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, if not a little shaken up. I’ll need a few stitches but once I’m patched up, we’ll have to go to the station, give a statement. Then, I promised Dane and George that I’d buy them dinner, since we’re missing ours because of the attack.”

“Oh, my God, Drake… It was Lisa’s father who was watching you when you were in Manhattan before?”

“Looks like it. He must have heard I was back in town and seeing Porter about a job. Maybe came to the 8thAvenue apartment to check it out, see if it was true. I had no idea he was so misled about the whole business with Lisa and Derek. And Jones. He really was fed a bunch of lies by Lisa about what happened. She’s probably been inciting him to violence or something. Him and his son. Lisa’s half-brother.”

“Him, too?”

“We think he might have been driving the van.”

“Police will probably charge him with attempted abduction and assault, right? He’ll be going to jail?”

“If he’s found mentally sound. He’ll probably be checked out to see if he’s unbalanced. If so, the most he’d get would be time in a mental hospital and therapy. We’ll see. Police will be looking for the driver. So far, Mr. Monroe hasn’t said anything.”

“I hope police catch him and soon. He’s still a threat if it was him.”

“Don’t worry. We’ve alerted security about him. They’ll be on the lookout for him in case he tries to find us.”

“What happened? I mean, why did this happen? Where was George?”
