“The entire look and feel of the space, especially the expansion next door.”

“I think it’s pretty innovative that he found a way to make an income both day and night. The restaurant is a great idea. Are you thinking of doing something similar?” I tilt my head and look at him curiously.

“Not atFriction. Not unless I acquire a neighboring property like Roger has. I’ve learned a lot about the business from him, you know? He actually made me a partner here when I was just starting. He took a chance on me. And when I wanted to venture to California, he released me from my contract and let me go with no hard feelings.”

I look at him in surprise. “So, why did you leave Florida?”

“A lot of things happened and I decided to get a fresh start.”

I do not have to ask what happened. He must have been really devastated to move clear across the country to get away from the source of his broken heart.

“What would you say to us going back toDeep Southtonight?”

“Deep South? What’s that?”

“Roger’s club. It’s very hard to get into but all I have to do is say the word and we’ll have two VIP entries.”

“Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t catch the name.”

“So, do you want us to go tonight?” His tone is earnest and the look in his eyes sincere.

“Um, I would. But I don’t have anything to wear.”

He shrugs. “Is that all?” He takes out his phone.

“Hi, Avery. It’s Lucan. Are you busy today?”

I turn my head to look outside once more, trying not to eavesdrop.

“I’m going to bring someone over right now. Take care of her.”

He gives the driver instructions and we soon pull up to a department store. He helps me out of the vehicle and we step inside. I am immediately blown away by the high end fashion. A woman appears out of nowhere.

“Lucan! It’s been ages!”

He greets her with a hug and kiss on the cheek. “Too long.” He turns and beckons me forward.

“This is Summer and we’re going toDeep Southtonight. She needs something to wear.”

“Say no more.”

He pulls out his wallet and hands her a card. Everything has been moving so quickly but it is at this point that I find my voice.

“I couldn’t ask you to do that, Lucan. I can pay for my own clothes.”

“I invited you out, Summer.”

“But the club entry costs—”

“Nothing actually. Roger is my friend. He never charges me here and same goes when he visits.”

“And then these clothes—”

“How about if you reimburse me. Will that make you feel better about going shopping?”

I go silent, feeling two pairs of eyes boring into me.

“I-I guess that could work.”
