“Hey, what’s wrong?” He leaned over to squeeze her thigh.

“Just thinking that my bad luck has followed me here.”

“You don’t have bad luck.”

She gave him an incredulous look. “My car broke down right before a snowstorm hit, then we got robbed, I hurt my wrist, and scraped my hands and knees, stubbed my toe, and got pricked by a needle. If that isn’t a whole bucket load of bad luck then I don’t know what is.”

“Baby,” he said in a soft croon. “I tell you what. I have an idea of how to get rid of your bad luck.”

“Does it involve locking me away or wrapping me up in bubble wrap?”

“Umm. All right, plan b.”

She snorted with laughter. She was starting to understand him.

“We’ll do a good luck ceremony.”

“Now you’re just making stuff up.”

He pulled up outside a nondescript building. What was this place? The windows were all tinted and there was no signage.

“No, I’m not. I have an idea for a cleansing. It does involve glitter, though. So we’ll have to do it at Reyes’s place since that bastard didn’t care one bit about what Emme did to my medicine bag. We could do it in his office at Reaper’s.”

Her eyes widened. “Won’t he be mad?”

“Furious.” Hack grinned.

She had to giggle. “Do you really think it would work?”

“Of course. I can’t have my best girl walking around with bad luck. It’s not good for my poor heart. Or my hair.”

“Your hair?” she asked, confused.

“Yeah, you getting hurt or into trouble all the time is giving me gray hair.”

She rolled her eyes at him.

“Come on. It’s time to get your treat.” His phone rang before he could move, and glanced down at it, frowning. “Sorry. Let me take this. Hello? Yeah? That’s right. What? Really? How did he die? Fuck. You think it was someone that he stole from? No, we’re back in Billings. Yeah, thanks for letting me know. Yeah, I’ll let her know.”

He ended the call, scowling at his phone.

“What is it?”

“That was the police officer that took our statements when we were robbed in Sioux Falls.”

“Oh, have they found the guy? Or your wallet?”

“I guess you could say they’ve found the guy. He’s dead. Found in an alley not far from the restaurant.”

“Is that not a good thing? Your words sound like it’s a good thing, but the way you’re frowning makes me think it’s a bad thing. I mean . . . I know someone dying is never something good. But he robbed us. At gunpoint.”

“It’s not that he’s dead. It was just . . . he was shot in the head.”

“Wow. I guess someone he’d robbed caught up with him?” Now she felt a bit queasy.

He glanced over at her, his gaze moving to where she was holding her tummy.

“Shit. I shouldn’t have told you.”
