“It still smells.”

“Yeah, and that’s likely in the drapes. Maybe the carpets.”

“I should clean those. Right. Silly Greer. Idiot.” She smacked her hand against the floor.

“Whoa. Absolutely not,” he said sternly. Standing he reached down and picked her up.

“Hey!”

He set her down on the kitchen counter. “You are not to hurt yourself. You have a safeword for when everything gets overwhelming. And you’re not to speak badly of yourself either.”

“Oh. I didn’t mean to . . . it didn’t really hurt.” But there was a guilty look on her face. “Are you going to punish me now?”

He gave her a surprised look. “Right now?” Sure, he’d been going to spank her when he got home for not calling him immediately after her run-in with that asshole.

But no fucking way was he punishing her when she was so obviously upset.

“Yes. Right now. I deserve a big punishment. I was so naughty.”

“How were you naughty?”

Her face was filled with surprise. “I nearly burned the house down!”

Shit.

“Baby, you did no such thing.” He cupped her face between his hands.

“I did. There was so much smoke.”

“Did you mean to do that?” he asked.

“No, of course not.”

“It was an accident. I’m not going to punish you for an accident.”

“But . . . but . . .” Tears dripped down her face.

He drew her into his arms. “Baby, shh. You’re worrying me.”

“I want to be a good girl.”

“Greer is a good girl. She’s always a good girl. My precious baby girl. Nothing you could do would ever truly be bad. A bit naughty, but never bad.”

She sniffled. “I don’t want to cause you problems and that’s all I seem to do, and now you have to get the carpets and drapes cleaned. But I can do that. Or I’ll pay for it if you want professionals.”

“Greer, hush. You’re not doing it and you’re not paying for anything,” he said firmly as he carried her back to his bedroom. Poor thing was exhausted. She looked utterly done in as he settled in the armchair in the corner of the room with her on his lap. Grabbing her chin, he tilted her face back.

“I shouldn’t have gotten distracted while it was cooking,” she muttered. “I just wanted to clean the house up a bit . . .”

“You were cleaning the house? I thought you were going to do some work today?”

“I forgot. I’ll have to do that tonight.”

“Baby girl, you aren’t doing anything but sleeping tonight. You’re completely exhausted.”

“But I have to work!”

He eyed her. “I’ll make you a deal. If you go to sleep early I’ll wake you up when I leave in the morning so you can start work early. But no work tonight.”
