She glanced at him, and a soft blush rolled over her face. “Maybe.”

“Hey, guys.” Tao waved a hand. “I got my ball into the pond. Can I go again?”

Lucas couldn’t help but laugh. Tao wasn’t a bad guy, and over the past hour or so of golfing, he found him to be decent. He still didn’t like him touching Eliana, though.

They made it to the eighteenth hole, and he had relaxed. He’d forgotten why they were golfing in the first place when Eliana tensed next to him in the cart.

He looked where her eyes were and stopped on a man with a cart a few feet away from them. He wore a colorful short sleeve shirt with shorts. A cigar stuck out of his mouth as he spoke to another man in the group of people around him. A shiver ran down Lucas’s spine. His wolf growled with rage.

“Is that …” He didn’t get to finish when Tao nodded.

“Yeah, that’s Garth.”

Lucas looked the man up and down, noting the criminal looked like the man from the photos he researched last night when he couldn’t sleep. Garth was an ass. He oozed greed and corruption.

Garth laughed. Lucas saw Eliana’s hands tighten into fists with anger.

“Eliana, remain calm,” Tao whispered to her. “We came here to snoop. Don’t do anything stupid.”

He looked at Tao. “Has she done something stupid in the past?”

Tao snorted. “You have no idea how ballsy this woman is. I swear she would walk into the mouth of a crocodile if it gets her point across.”

They both turned to Eliana, but she was gone, storming across the area straight for Garth and his group.

“Shit!” They both cursed at the same time, half-tripping out of the cart.

“Eliana!” Tao whisper-yelled at her, but she kept moving.

“Eliana!” Lucas growled her name, but she didn’t stop.

“This isn’t part of the plan,” Tao said. “Eliana. Don’t. Eliana!”

Eliana marched right at Garth, who turned toward her. He blew a puff of his cigar as she stopped a few feet from him.

“You killed my uncle,” Eliana said, half-yelling at him.

Garth’s eyebrows shot up, and the people next to him gasped.

Both guys were hauling ass after her, just a few feet behind.

“I’m sorry, dear. I think you have me confused with someone else,” Garth said, shaking his head. “I’ve never seen you in my life.”

A guy and a woman stepped up next to Garth. It was clear they were his bodyguards. He and Tao stopped next to her, both growling at the same time.

Garth’s eyes flicked to them before dropping back to Eliana. “Besides, dear. It’s rude to accuse someone of that. Do you know who I am?”

Eliana’s eyes narrowed. “I know exactly who you are. You’re a murderer. You killed my uncle Phil Hal.”

Garth gave her a pitiful look. “I’m sorry, dear, but I didn’t. I imagine you’re struggling to handle all of that and are losing track of time. Pity that he went out the way he did. I heard about his drug problem.”

Eliana’s hands balled tighter.

“But I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure the next alpha will be cleaner and more organized.” He looked at the others around him, chuckling.

Eliana growled. “I have all the letters, and I’ll be taking them to the police. It’s all the evidence I need to prove you killed him.”

They watched as Garth’s face shifted. His eyes darkened, and they narrowed on Eliana with rage. “You better get used to backing down, little one. I don’t take orders from a little bitch, and when I’m alpha, I will be sure to make that known. I have every intention of taking this pack, and there is no one who is going to stop me.”
