Panic crossed Elizabeth’s face.

“No, of course not. It’s company business.”

“Okay.”

“So, Elizabeth, huh? Now I understand the look that passed between you and the redhead when I mentioned living in Elizabeth Bay.”

“Liz…it seemed a strange omen. The girl with me was Linda unless she chooses to tell you otherwise. Where do we go from here? Do I still have a job?”

“Oh, there is more than one strange omen, but I’ll tell you about that later. Why would you think you wouldn’t have a job? I have no intention of rescinding the offer made to you, but Elizabeth…”

“Liz,” she interrupted.

“I prefer Elizabeth. Pretty name for a very pretty lady.”

Elizabeth shrugged. “What were you going to say?”

“I don’t interfere with my employees’ private lives unless their work is affected and their interference in mine would not be tolerated.”

“Why would they want to interfere?”

“I want to see you, take you out on a date.”

“Why?”

I studied her face while holding onto her wrists and saw the confusion in her eyes. The lady still had the same effect on me that she’d had on Friday night. I was intrigued.

My resolve had always been not to allow my feelings to become involved with any woman, so why was I throwing that aside for this lady? Why did I want to take her to my home, into my bed, and make long, slow love to every inch of her body?

“Why? Because I like you.”

“You don’t know me.”

“Not yet, but I would very much like to spend time getting to know you.”

She shook her head. “I’m not sure it’s a good idea for me to date you, Mr Jackson.”

“Hudson,” I corrected. She opened her mouth to say something, most likely that she shouldn’t be calling me by my first name, and I held up one hand. “It’s Hudson when we’re alone.”

“Okay, but I still don’t think it’s a good idea for us to see each other outside of work.”

“Let me ask you a question.”

“Okay.”

“If you hadn’t discovered I worked here, would you still want to spend time with me?”

“Of course, who wouldn’t? You’re a hunk and I can’t believe you’re still single.”

Pulling one hand free of my hold, she slapped it over her mouth. Her face turned a deep shade of cherry as I laughed.

“Sorry, I tend to be the open mouth, insert foot, type of person.”

“Don’t be, it’s refreshing to have someone say what they’re thinking. People are usually very proper around me for some reason.”

I gathered her wrist back in my hand. “Friday night. Dinner?”

Elizabeth remained quiet and she couldn’t hide the struggle going on within. The desire to go out with me won over the warning bells that must have sounded.
