Fuck, I lived for those moments.

Especially when she looked at me.

I held my breath, waiting for her to kick me out, hoping I could have just one more minute with her before she started hating me.

She just sat there, continuing to stare at nothing, while I counted down the seconds, waiting for the angel of death to send me into the bowels of hell. That was exactly what it would feel like if she sent me away.Death wouldn’t even take away the hollow sensation I felt when I wasn’t near her.

“Huh,” she muttered, and I had to blink a few times before I realized the light, musical noise that left her was actually that pretty laugh of hers that I loved so damn much and not her whimper of fear.

Confusion hit me at the same time as relief did.

She wasn’t screaming and shouting for me to get out?She had every reason to want me miles away from her, yet she only looked at me, her eyes glittering more than ever, making me want to howl with joy.

“Delaney was right,” she said when I couldn’t get my throat to produce words.“You really are gone for me.”

“So fucking gone,” I choked out in agreement, the oxygen filling my empty lungs as I sucked in my next breath of air.

Tears filled her eyes, and she lowered her chin.“A-are you sure?I just… I don’t… How is that even possible?”

Swallowing a curse, I pulled her head down to my chest, pressing her ear over my heart.“Don’t ask stupid questions, Nishia. You’re too smart for that shit.”

“But—”

“Just listen to what my heart is telling you, little fairy.Listen carefully, and you’ll hear everything you need to know.”Kissing the top of her head, I closed my eyes, savoring the scent of her shampoo and the feel of her against me.“Let my heart speak to yours, baby.”

After a moment, she relaxed against me, her cast lying across my stomach as she snuggled against me, her ear pressed deeper into my chest while she tried to hear everything I wasn’t sure I was able to put into words. But I knew if she listened carefully enough, she’d hear everything I couldn’t speak aloud.

“Jack?”

“Baby?”

“Same,” she said quietly.

“Hmm?”I lifted my head, to look down at her better, not understanding what she was telling me, but she was already falling asleep.“Nishia?”

“My heart says the same thing,” she mumbled before her breathing evened out completely, leaving me wide awake with my heart suddenly pounding.

Was it even possible?

Fuck, I didn’t care if it was possible or not.If she said it, then it was true, and I was going to hang on to that with every ounce of strength I had.

Closing my eyes again, I tightened my arm around her and listened, hoping to hear her heart speaking back to mine until sleep took me.

Poppingthe top off a bottle of beer, I put the drink in front of a regular and then picked up a bottle of tequila to pour the round of shots the college girls at the end of the bar had ordered.

“Let’s do body shots,” the blonde in the middle suggested loudly.“I bet we’ll make a killing if we charge to let the guys drink José out of our belly buttons.”She gave me a drunken smile that she probably thought was sultry.“But you can lick me for free.”

“This is a solicitation-free bar,” I informed her.“You want to pick up a john, go somewhere else.”

Her brow scrunched up.“A what?”

“A john,” Samara repeated as she walked up to the bar.Leaning one arm across the top, she cocked a hip and gave the group a dispassionate once-over.The confusion only grew on the blonde’s face.“He’s calling you a whore.”

One of her friends giggled.“OMG.You totally are, Phoebe.”
