“She is!”another friend exclaimed in agreement.“She sucked one of the pool shark’s dicks last weekend. That’s why she bitched and moaned all night about wanting to come here again. But he’s not here yet.I don’t blame you, though, Phoebe.I would definitely shoot my shot with tall, wide, and delicious here.”

Something flared in Samara’s eyes.It was there and gone in a split second. If I hadn’t been watching her, I would have missed the glimmer, but as soon as I saw it, I could practically taste the danger in the air.

Shit.

I didn’t need Anya Vitucci’s clone running loose in my bar on a slow night, let alone one of our busiest Saturdays to date.We were down two people because Uncle Colt was on a run and Kingston had to cover at Aggie’s because there wasn’t anyone in the kitchen. His mom had called just before dinner, begging for help because the diner was getting slammed and their scheduled cook had been a no-show.

“I’m not a whore.”Phoebe turned around to face the second friend, wobbled unsteadily, and nearly fell face first into the first friend’s chest because of her ridiculously high heels.“I just don’t let a good dick go to waste.”

“You’ve been talking about his dick all week,” the second friend complained.“We’re jealous.Maybe Mr.Pool Shark will take us all home tonight.”

“That will be so much fun!”Phoebe squealed.“If he comes in tonight, we’re def gonna go home with him.”

“There he is now!”The first friend announced, thrusting her hand between the other two girls and pointing her finger toward the door.

I didn’t have to look to know she meant either Chance, Elias, or Reid.No way the pool shark they were talking about was Matt or Tanner.Neither would have cheated on their wives. But their sons? They were the biggest manwhores in Creswell Springs.Reid and Elias had slowed down on messing around with the college girls, though, so I was leaning more toward Chance.

All three of them were way too old to be chasing sorority bitches.I’d stopped dicking around with college girls before I hit my midtwenties. They were too damn exhausting.

Nishia was going to start school soon, but that didn’t count. She was younger than the blonde and her friends. But that didn’t matter either. My little fairy was different.Special.

“Can I get two beers over here, man?”someone called from the other end of the bar that I was covering while Uncle Raider dealt with his own customers. My dad was making rounds, making sure the place stayed below capacity. No one was getting table service tonight, and we were getting slammed.

Ignoring him, I picked up the bottle of vodka from the top shelf and turned back to Samara, pouring her a measure before adding diet soda.“You going to be good?”I asked as I leaned in close to her.

She picked up her drink and swallowed half the contents before lowering her hand with her typically bright smile in place.Nothing was out of place with her, but that all too brief glimmer still bothered me.I knew it wasn’t a trick of the light, but I didn’t even sense a bad vibe coming off her.It was unsettling, when I’d felt the danger rolling off her only minutes before.

“I heard your girl got her jaw undone yesterday,” Samara said instead of answering.“How is she feeling?”

I kept my eyes trained on her for a long moment, trying to read her, but when she just looked up at me expectantly, I shrugged.“She spoke more when she couldn’t fully open her mouth.”

Her doctor said she would feel tight and uncomfortable for a while, but I wasn’t expecting her to go so quiet on me.She had barely opened her mouth after getting back from the doctor’s office the day before.

The cast on her arm had been removed the week before, while the walking boot hadn’t come off until they’d unwired her jaw.Outwardly, there was no longer any visible evidence of what had happened to her.But I couldn’t help wondering if it was haunting her more now that she was able to move more freely…or if there was something else bothering her.

It had been seven weeks since she’d gotten out of the hospital, eight weeks since her assault, and I hadn’t spent a night away from her since returning from Arizona.I wanted to hear her voice, damn it!

Empathy darkened Samara’s eyes.“I could stop by and check on her before I head home,” she offered.

“Delaney told me she was going to take Nishia out for dinner.Hopefully that cheers her up.”

If it didn’t, I wouldn’t rest until I figured out what was bothering my little fairy.

“Who is that?”the blonde’s voice rose as the volume in the bar did, annoying as fuck.“Oh, yum!”

Samara shifted so she was half turned to the entrance.Lifting her drink, she glanced at the door, and I followed her gaze.Max had just walked in.His back was to me as he pushed the door open with one arm and waited for the two women to enter.Delaney and Nishia walked in, holding hands.

My eyes ate up the sight of her in tight jeans and a top that hinted at the lushness beneath. But then I noticed others looking at her, like the fucking frat boys at the end of the bar, momentarily giving up on trying to get me to bring them beers.Jaw ticking, I gripped the top of the bar and lowered my head, watching her happily swing her arm back and forth as she and Delaney practically skipped toward me.

That smile on her face lit up the room, her glasses falling down her nose ever so slightly, her dark hair dancing around her shoulders as she giggled with her friend.

Fuck, I’d never seen anything more beautiful than my little fairy happy.

“He’s coming this way!”the blonde hissed to her friends.“Forget about Pool Shark. We’re takinghimhome tonight.”

With her hair down, the ends curled, and little makeup, Nishia was easily the most beautiful woman in the entire bar.Her giggle reached my ears again when Delaney said something that made her laugh. The sound hit me in the solar plexus, and I bit back a groan at how pretty it was.

I had no fucking clue why she’d gone silent on me the day before, but it appeared Delaney had fixed it.
