He’s a man of few words. I won’t complain, as his lack of conversational skills suits my needs.
I glance around in search of Rey, but she’s still AWOL.
Instead of waiting here for her return, I grab her bag from the table and go in search of her. I don’t have to travel far before I hear her inimitable laughter ringing out like a siren call.
I round a corner to find her in conversation with one of the male dancers from the performance.
“Well, I’m glad you thought so, Reyna, because Veronica is going to—”
I close the gap, instantly noting how this guy is looking atmyfiancée.
Woah, tiger!
Yet even as I tell myself to keep my calm, it’s like a car crash, and there’s no hope of slamming on the brakes.
“Hey, Sunshine.” I wrap my arms around her waist to rest my chin on her bare shoulder before I press a kiss to her soft cheek, never once taking my eyes off the insipid blue ones of the blonde kid in front of me. “Ready to go home?”
“Alex! I’m so glad you’re here.” Her happiness at my presence is evident in her voice, but the dipshit loitering before us clearly doesn’t give a rat’s ass, because he narrows his eyes when he observes my hands resting possessively on her slender waist.
“This is Todd, an old friend from college.”
The name sounds far too familiar…though I realize why almost instantly.
The friend-with-benefits guy!
“Todd is part of the company now. Isn’t that wonderful?”
She angles her face toward mine, utterly oblivious to the silent undercurrent running between me and Todd.
“That’s amazing, Rey. Ford is bringing the car—”
Todd, clearly not picking up what I’m putting down—or maybe just too fucking dumb to know when to quit—cuts me off when he steps closer to playfully swat at one of the ruffles on Reyna’s hip.
“There’s an after-party across town. I could get you in as my plus-one.” He arches a questioning brow. “For old time’s sake, hmm?”
Rey raises wide eyes to mine, but my complete attention is on the dick bag that is Todd. She turns back to him with a hesitant smile. “Thank you for asking me, Todd. I—”
“Oh, now I know who he is.” I clap my right hand across my forehead, as though realization is suddenly dawning. “You’rethe Todd with the teeny-weeny cock!”
I lean down to whisper loudly in Rey’s ear, keeping my eyes on Todd’s reddening face. “Is itreallythe size of apickle?”
Rey gasps, and Todd stares at me as though I’ve mortally wounded him before turning to Rey with accusing eyes. “Real nice, Reyna. At least my dick works. You’re broken—”
I take a menacing step toward the little shit, fully aware that this conversation has taken a swan dive, and we need to get out of here. “Leavenow, and I won’t tell Veronica you were fraternizing with the patrons.”
He wavers, clearly needing to say more, but the threat of his job is enough to see him shuffle off begrudgingly.
“Rey, I—”
She holds up her palm. “I don’t want to talk about this right now, Alex. I had it under control, but you insulted him—”
“Not my fault that it was clearlytrue!”
“That’s not the point and you know—”
“He could see we were together, andstill,he wanted you to go with him to some shit hole across town. For very obvious reasons, I might add!”
