Frosty.

I need her to know what I didn’t get around to telling her.

My eyes flick to her left, and I see Rayne looking directly at me.

I look away. I don’t need Rayne thinking something is going on between us. Then it hits me that she may already know… she and Mia are close. Then again, Rayne isn’t acting frosty toward me, so surely Mia hasn’t told her anything.

Still, I shouldn’t even be looking over there.

I’m glad when they decide to call it a night.

After the girls hug and squeal as they say their goodbyes outside, Tom keeps his eyes on her. I silently imagine all the lewd things he’s possibly thinking while pretending to be a nice guy. I felt like going alpha on his ass tonight, but I couldn’t do a fucking thing except sit there. But I’ve just about reached my limit.

Rayne walks over toward the car with Darko right outside the restaurant.

Mia says goodbye to her friends, and they jump into a taxi. I wonder why this douchebag is still hanging around. He says something to her, and she shakes her head. Then he hails another cab. I assume he’s going a different way than Mia, but I still don’t trust him.

When she gives him a hug and he pulls back to then bend and try to kiss her, I go postal. She pulls back and shakes her head as he backs off, appearing confused about what he’s done.

I start walking over there before I even register what I’m doing.

Mia turns, her eyes wide as Tom looks bewildered at my approach.

“Hands off her, asshole!” I say, pushing him in the chest.

“Dante!” Mia cries. “Don’t…Tom was just leaving.”

“Who’s this dick?” Tom points at me as I shove him again.

“Your worst fucking nightmare, now get the fuck out of here!”

He glares at me, assessing if I can take him, choosing wisely to jump in the next cab that comes along before I can rearrange his face. Fucking coward.

Mia spins on me. “What are you doing?”

I give her a look. “You wanted that asshole to kiss you?”

She frowns. “That’s not the point.”

“What is, then? My job here this weekend is to protect you, so that’s what I’m doing.”

“I don’t need your protection!” She jabs me in the chest. “I don’t need you coming to my rescue. I can handle myself.”

“Well too fucking bad. You’ve got it anyway. And it didn’t look like it from this angle.”

She scowls at me as if I’m the one who tried to come onto her, not that asshole who ran away like a frightened little boy.

“What is your problem?” she fires back at me as we stand on the street arguing.

“You,at the moment. Let’s go to the car.”

“You can’t tell me what to do!”

“Right now, I can. Because that’s my job this weekend.”

“That’s the second time you’ve said that. Anyone would think it’s a chore for you to even be here.”

I close my eyes momentarily. “You’re mad at me. I don’t like it, Mia. I’m sorry that I didn’t text after…”
