One flicker of a smile. “Your fae is waking up. You will feel us differently.”

I did sense them in ways that felt new, like I wasawareof them around me in a way beyond the physical. But I still didn’t feel magic or anything like it.

Silver’s voice was low. “The Legion came to see us last night after you were asleep. Everything we thought is true. They want you, and they’re not going to stop until they have you, or we change the status quo.”

My body went cold. “Oh.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Wraith murmured. “Not now.”

“I am though.”

“Come here, Skyla,” Silver said quietly. The command left no room for argument.

My stomach tumbled. I went to him, slipping over pillows and ending up on my knees beside him. He touched my shoulder. “You sleep okay?”

“Yes.” I bit my lip. My skin tingled with nerves and anticipation.

He nodded. “Good. I’m sorry for being harsh with you last night. It’s our fault. We haven’t explained everything to you, or what needs to happen.”

“What needs to happen?”

Silver scrubbed a hand over his face. “Do you want us, Sky?”

A chill ran down my skin, followed by panic. “Of course I do. Did I do something wrong? I know this hasn’t been perfect off the bat, but—”

A hand landed on my shoulder and pulled me to my back. Grave placed himself over me, pinning me to the mattress and kissing my chest softly. “Shhh.”

The soft sound and the feeling of his weight and his lips froze me. Grave kissed across my shoulder, allowing his touch to calm the panic.

“No, you didn’t do anything wrong,” Silver said. “But forever is a long time, baby girl. We want to make sure this is what you want before you can’t go back.”

I didn’t pretend to fully understand what was happening inside me, but I knew they were mine. The suggestion of not being with them woke up a savage need inside me to claim them. My nails dug into Grave’s arms. They weremine.

“Try to push me away,” I dared, snarling. “I dare you.”

Grave’s lips curled into a smile against my skin. “We’re not pushing you away.”

“Feels like it.”

His hands moved, pulling my legs apart so I could feelallof him in between my legs, despite him not being inside me. “Does it?”

Delta choked on a laugh.

“I promise I have a reason to ask.”

“What is it?” I was still very distracted by Grave’s mouth as he moved it down my chest.

“Athanasíais the best—the only—way to protect you,” Comet said. “If you’re immortal, you can’t be struck, and you can’t be used against us. You’ll be safe.”

Weaving my fingers through Grave’s hair, I pulled his face away from my skin, trying desperately to focus on the serious discussion we were having. He smirked, instead moving his hips slowly, rocking against my core, making everything even worse.

“Okay. So we just make it to my birthday and we’re golden.”

“That’s the problem,” Silver said. “You won’t be able to triggerathanasíaif you’re not fully merged with your fae side. Right now you’re not. Your mind is fighting your instincts, and you’re struggling.”

Fear dropped into my gut. It was true—I felt it, but I didn’t know what to do about it. I didn’t have any fae powers to speak of. How the hell was I going to merge with a fae side that hadn’t given me anything?

“What if I can’t?”
