I didn’t even have time to hear his response before Kyle was ushering me behind his closed office door.

“What was that?” he asked. Kyle hardly gave me any room to come inside before he turned on me. We were standing close. Too close.

“What?” I asked, feigning innocence. I did not want to have this conversation with him. Not now. Not when I needed to internally freak out over agreeing to go on a date, the first date I’d been on since my divorce, without even realizing I was being asked on a date.

He said group. I know he did.

“Was Jerry making you uncomfortable?” Kyle asked.

“What?” I laughed. “No.”

Kyle’s already dark blue eyes darkened more. He was not happy. “He’s taking you on a date?”

I sighed. “He got your number and asked you on a date? That’s beyond unprofessional.”

“He’s not my boss,” I said, looking at him pointedly. “It’s okay to ask out a co-worker, especially one who doesn’t work in the same department as you.”

Kyle took a step closer to me, running his hand through his dark, disheveled hair. I held my breath. Being that close to him wasn’t a good thing for me.

“There has to be a company policy about interoffice dating.”

“There isn’t.” I’d looked. I’d never admit it to him, but as soon as we started working together, I wanted to see his policy on office romances. There weren’t any.

Our faces were so close, too close. I wanted to kiss him so badly I didn’t know if I could stop myself.

“Well, that’s going to change.” Kyle stalked away, taking a set behind his laptop and started typing right away like he was writing something up that second.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Is Kyle jealous?I sat across from him, thinking over my words carefully. “Why is this bothering you so much?”

Kyle stopped his typing to look up at me. “I don’t want any of my employees to feel uncomfortable.”

“I already said I don’t,” I told him. “So why is this bothering you?” I was pushing but I needed to. If he was feeling something for me, I had to know.

“Emma,” Kyle said like he was begging me to let him off the hook.

“No,” I said. “Why is it bothering you if Jerry asked me out?” I held his gaze, my posture upright and sure.

In contrast, Kyle leaned back. “It’s not. Do whatever you want, Emma.”

It was a bluff, I saw right though him, but if he was going to lie, so was I.

“Great because I’m really looking forward to my date.”

I pushed up from my chair and made my way back to my desk.

I was sure of two things— I was going out on a date and Kyle was really unhappy about it.

Chapter 11

Kyle

“Ineeditonmy desk by the end of the day,” I snapped into the phone before slamming it back down on the receiver.

“Woah,” Luis, my head VP of operations, teased, holding up his hands. “It’s not that serious, man.”

I paced the length of my office, Luis watching me out of the corner of his eye.”

“Everyone is being extra incompetent today.”
