“What are you doing here?”

Moon ignores me and marches straight to the kitchen carrying several bags. I chase after her.

“What are you doing?”

“What does it look like?” She sets the bags on the kitchen counter. “Duh. Making us dinner. No world was conquered on an empty stomach.”

“Disagree,” Soleil says. “I conquer the pottery world when I’m hungry all the time.”

Moon rolls her eyes. “Because you forget to eat when you’re in ‘artist’ mode.”

“What’s with the air quotes? I am an artist.”

“What world are we conquering?” I ask before they can get into a squabble about the definition of artist. They’re both artists in my opinion. Moon’s medium is food and Soleil’s is pottery. And yarn. Her knitted vibrator covers are amazingly detailed.

“Your world!” Ashlyn screams.

I cover my ears. “Are we conquering the world or shouting it down?”

Ashlyn shrugs. “Is there a difference?”

I ignore her to ask Harmony, “How did they convince you to come out tonight?”

You’ll find Harmony’s face in the dictionary next to the word introvert. Don’t get me wrong. She’s a great friend and is always there for me, but she prefers staying at home with her pack of animals to coming out.

“I lied and said Elder would be here,” Moon says.

Harmony’s cheeks flush and she glances away. “You did not,” she mumbles.

I bump her hip. “Does someone have a crush on Elder?”

“She does,” Soleil announces and Harmony’s face darkens to the color of an overripe tomato. “But we’re not here to discuss Elder and Harmony.”

“Because we’re friends. Nothing more,” Harmony insists.

“The same way Eden and Miller are friends?” Ashlyn bats her eyelashes as if she’s some innocent child. She’s not. She’s a shit stirrer is what she is.

I scowl. “Miller and I are not friends. I told you. The man drives me banonkers.”

She tugs on my hair. “Sure. And Miller doesn’t want to fist your pink-tipped hair while he—”

I slam a hand over her mouth. “He doesn’t. And I don’t.”

The tingling in my core makes me a liar, but I ignore it. Miller and I will never be more than enemies. Maybe friendly neighbors in a few years time. Although, if the brewery expansion goes through, I won’t be his neighbor anymore as I won’t be able to afford to keepEden’s Garden.

I collapse into one of my kitchen chairs with a sigh. Considering today’s foreclosure notice, the business might be gone without the brewery expansion.

“This!” Soleil sticks a finger in my face. “Is why we’re here!”

My nose scrunches in confusion. “Because of my face? What’s wrong with my face?”

Does worrying about money constantly make a person age? Whatever. Wrinkles and gray hair are the least of my problems.

The chairs scrape against the floor as everyone grabs a spot and sits down at the table. Uh-oh. Is this an intervention?

“Soleil tattled,” Moon says.

“Tattled? What are we? In sixth grade?”
