When her one word comes out with a sob, I pull her in a hug. “I know this is a lot. More than you signed up for, but thank you for staying. You will be well compensated when this is over.”

“I was happy to be there for the kids, and I didn’t stay for the money.”

I tighten my hug before letting her go. “Try to get some rest. I’m not sure how long we’ll be here.”

She marches to the bedroom while I enter the kitchen. Beside the refrigerator is a weapons locker. I enter the combination and open it. There are a few M4s, a couple of grenades, two nine millimeters, and a couple dozen packs of ammo.

I take a nine millimeter, two clips, and two boxes of ammo. There’s no way someone can get inside The Box, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be ready in the event they figure out how.

I set everything on the counter, load both clips and open the drawer containing burner cells. I open one and dial Viktor.

There’s no answer.

I try Oliver, but he doesn’t answer either.

This can’t be happening. Where the hell are they?

I check the monitors again and nearly drop the burner.

“Fuck.”

Eros is surrounded, and Cillian is in the nightclub, pushing a bloody Oliver in front of him.

Cillian’s mouth is moving, so I turn on the sound.

“Where are you, Ava Manarch? Come out, come out, wherever you are.”

“Don’t, Ava,” Oliver screams, staring at the camera ahead.

Cillian kicks him, making him fall to his knees.

“If you don’t come out, I’ll kill your brother.”

A million things run through my mind, but the most important one doesn’t change.

I can’t let my brother die.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

Viktor

We slip into the SUV. Angus turns the key in the ignition, but nothing happens. He twists the key again and again but still nothing.

“Fuck,” he growls out.

“I guess it would have been too easy if everything went our way.”

“Aye. What now?”

“We have to go back and find a vehicle. Are there any weapons here?” I ask him.

“We can check the hidden compartment in the trunk.” After scoping the area, we get out of the SUV and go to the back. Angus opens the trunk. “Here goes nothing.”

Luck is on our side. There are two M4s. It’s not much, but should be enough to clear a path.

“Any chance there are burners in there?” I ask him, not wanting to use my cell.

“Aye.” He takes out two cell phones. I grab one and dial Oliver.
