“Who is this?” he greets, clearly out of breath.

“Oliver, tell me Ava called you?”

“She did. Fuck, swerve left,” he orders.

“Where is she?”

He barks out more instructions before saying, “On her way to Eros.”

“Why? She knows the plan.”

“She was being followed.” I hear the screech of tires through the phone before he adds, “Watch it.”

“Oliver…”

“Viktor, I’m being chased right now. We had to play a maneuver to clear a path for Ava and the kids. She’s on her way to The Box. I told her to stay put until one of us shows up.”

“Brace yourself,” I hear Ray shout, then the line goes quiet.

“Oliver… Oliver…” He doesn’t answer. “Fuck.”

“What is it?”

I drift my eyes to Angus. “Ava didn’t make it out of town. She’s on her way to Eros.”

“Then let’s go.”

We sprint back to the guardhouse. There isn’t as much gunfire as before. This is not exactly a good thing considering I don’t know which side is in control.

We use the trees for cover. I smell smoke.

As we get closer to the guardhouse, the smell becomes stronger.

In a matter of seconds, the source of the smoke comes into view.

The mansion has been set on fire.

“There goes your home, Ceannard.”

“That’s the least of my worries. They can burn the entire place down. All I care about is my family. I need to get to them fast.” We are about to exit the path when we hear gunfire. “Where is that coming from?” I ask, searching the grounds.

Angus surveys the area before answering, “I think the left. There seem to be a few men standing around.”

“Ours?”

“Can’t tell from here.”

I try to walk ahead of him, but he stops me.

“I don’t think so. I’ll go out first.”

“Angus—”

“You’re not dying on my watch. Just watch my back.”

I hate taking orders from anyone, Angus not being the exception, but I’m not interested in dying, either.

My family needs me.
