“I count six on this side of the vehicles and four on the other. Whichever way we go, we’ll be spotted. You take the four, and I’ll take the six,” Angus orders.

“I’m the one who gives orders, Angus. Don’t forget your place.”

He turns to me. “We’ve known each other for almost two decades. We have been through hell and back. I’m not about to tell Ava that I let you die on my watch. Right now, you aren’t my boss, so you do what I tell you.”

I’m about to reprimand him when I spot two men running toward us.

I step to the side, ready to shoot.

“Right,” I yell at Angus as I shoot, dropping the first one. Angus drops the second one. “Let’s go.”

He won’t call the shots. I am Viktor Manarch, Head of the Clan.

We move in formation. As we gain distance, I notice more men than Angus first counted. We tread and shoot as we advance toward the nearest vehicle. The tires on the first one are flat, so we keep going.

I’m so focused on what’s ahead of me that I don’t see the man sneaking up beside me.

I shoot, but so does he.

I hit his heart.

He hits my leg.

“Fuck.” I continue, not having a choice but to keep moving.

“Where did you get hit?” Angus asks

“Leg.”

Angus hisses but shifts his focus back to the task at hand, “The vehicle to your left is intact. Go to the passenger side. I’ll cover you.”

I move as quickly as I can while still covering Angus and myself. When I reach the SUV, I see that Angus was right. My gunshot wound is too severe—there’s no way I’ll able to drive. My jeans are soaked with blood, so I open the passenger door and slip in.

I search for the keys. Luckily, they’re in the cupholder.

Less than thirty seconds later, Angus gets in. As I hand him the keys, he asks, “How’s the leg?”

“I’ll live.”

“That is not what I asked.” He turns on the ignition and pulls out just in time. A dozen men are racing our way, shooting.

“It’s fine. Drive.”

He doesn’t add anything. He drives out of the mansion, running over anyone who gets in his way.

I redial Oliver, grinding my teeth when he doesn’t answer.

This can’t be good.

My leg is killing me, but there’s no time to deal with it. Angus takes a road I’ve never seen before.

He drives for a few minutes before a cabin appears on the horizon. “This is not the way to Eros. Where the fuck are you going?”

“We need to make a pit stop.”

“This isn’t the fucking time.” Ignoring me, he turns off the headlights and continues to drive like he knows where he’s going. “Angus…”

He stops the SUV and turns off the ignition. “Get out of the SUV, Viktor.”
