At first, I think he’s betraying me. I’ve never seen this place before.

“If I wanted to kill you, I would have already. I’ve had more than enough chances. Just get out,” he says nonchalantly.

He comes around to my side when I hop out of the SUV. “Come on. Let’s get inside.”

The cabin looks deserted, like someone forgot all about it. There are two steps to the front door. Angus helps me up the two steps to the door, then releases me. He enters a code in a keypad alongside the door and pushes it open.

The cabin looks like it’s falling apart from the outside, but the interior is state-of-the-art.

“Where the fuck are we?”

“It’s one of my many go-to places.” I look at him, demanding more. He gives it to me. “I have a few throughout the state. In the event we’re attacked, it becomes a command center.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because the whole point of a secret command center is for no one to know about their location or existence until absolutely needed. It can’t be compromised if no one knows about it.” There’s logic to his thinking. “Let’s go to the kitchen. I need to examine your leg.”

“We have to go now! Ava needs me.”

“Aye. But we need to make sure you’re able to stand and fight. You won’t be any help if you can’t fight.” When I remain stubborn, he adds, “The longer you argue with me, the longer it will take us to leave.”

“Fuck, Angus.”

He shrugs his shoulders before guiding me to the kitchen. I sit on a chair while he pulls a medic bag from under the sink. One of the many points of our training is giving medical attention. Having served in the military, Angus is one of our best medics.

He sets the bag on the table. “Let me see.” When I pull up my pants leg, he evaluates me. “It’s a through and through. I’ll clean, staple, and bandage it. Do you want something for the pain?”

“I want to leave and get to Ava and the kids.”

“Don’t be an asshole.” He takes out a bottle of pills and hands me two. “Take them. You might not feel the pain now, but you will.” I swallow the pills to shut him up.

It takes him about ten minutes to stitch me up.

“The room to the right has a closet full of weapons.”

He doesn’t need to say more. I stand and put weight on my leg. It hurts like hell, but I can manage.

I follow Angus to the room he indicated. It’s not a closet. It’s a fucking arsenal with exactly what we need. He grabs a bag and throws it at me. I open it up before filling it with weapons. He’s on the other side, doing the same.

By the time we finish, we’ve emptied the room.

I zip my bag and head for the SUV.

“We need a plan,” Angus tells me from behind.

“Go to Eros.”

“Aye. I mean when we get there. Chances are there will be foes waiting. They’ll know Ava is there with the kids by now.”

“We will cross that bridge when we get to it.”

We’re almost at the door.

“I know you want to be with them to make sure they’re safe, but barging in without a plan isn’t smart. You might just put them in greater danger.”

“I give the fucking orders, Angus! We’re going to Eros.”

He keeps his mouth shut while following me to the SUV.
