I melt into a puddle and leap off the bed.

Casper, not quite expecting my reaction, has just enough time to catch me.

Laughing, he says, “I’ve waited a long time to have you throw yourself at me.”

I wrap my arms and legs around him, pressing my forehead to his. “Get used to it.”

“I think I might.” His eyes dip south, lingering on my exposed breasts. “You are the most beautiful woman in the world.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Yes, I do. I know everything, and I’m crazy about you, sweetheart.”

“Take me to bed,” I whisper… and then I kiss him.

Casper ended up spending the night, since everyone knows now. Freya and Imani made excuses to leave the house, meaning we’re now alone, sitting on my bed after a particularly awesome shower.

He’s shirtless, leaning against my headboard and reading some case notes. I’m facing him, re-reading my dissertation and occasionally checking my emails since the Harts’ event is this weekend.

Casper either smirks or chuckles under his breath each time I take a break to go over anything related to the event. For the third time in about ten minutes, his phone pings with a text.

I try not to be obvious about it, but he spots me looking.

“You can ask me, Ainsley.”

“I trust you.”

“I’m talking to a friend. A cop.”

“About my parents?”

“There was another sighting of them about thirty miles away.”

“I don’t think they’ll come back.”

“I don’t, either. They’ll pick them up eventually. How will you feel when that happens?”

“Relieved.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

He nods. “Have you finished for the day?”

“I think so,” I say, covering a yawn with the back of my hand. “It’s so close now.”

“Your dissertation deadline or the event?”

“Shit. Both.”

“Come on, I’m taking you out.”

“What? Where?”

“Anywhere you like.”
