I knew what he meant. He’d been trying to make moves on me since I started here, and it was never flattering. Something inside me snapped.

“Like what?” I asked innocently.

“You know what I’m talking about. Pretty thing like you… you must get offers from men all the time.”

I frowned, playing dumb. “Job offers?”

Jerry scowled at me. If I could get him to put it into words, I could go to HR with what he was doing. I could open a harassment case, or at least get a warning against him for being inappropriate.

He knew that was what I was doing.

“A dumb woman isn’t attractive,” he spat.

I wanted to clap back, but before I had a chance, Jerry’s phone rang. He picked up the device and looked at the caller ID.

“Looks like we’re getting attention from Price, after all,” he said with a grin and answered. “I was hoping I’d hear from you…” He listened, and his smile faded, a frown taking its place.

“I don’t think that will be necessary. I mean, she’s just… No, I don’t think… Of course not, I would never suppose such a thing. I just don’t think… Yeah, all right. No, I heard you, loud and clear. All right, fine.”

The line went dead, and Jerry dropped the phone from his ear, putting it on the desk with more force than he needed to.

“We got approval for the project to move forward,” he sneered.

“That’s good news,” I said.

“He’ll only allow the project to move forward if you’re on it.” He lowered his sandwich and looked at it with a scowl.

“Me?” I asked, confused. “Why?”

“How should I know?” Jerry twisted his lips in disapproval. “It’s exactly what I just said. You must get offers from men all the time. If it wasn’t for you and your…” He let his voice trail off before he could say anything incriminating.

His face sobered, and he picked up his sandwich again, studying it for the next bite.

“Of course, I’ll allow it,” Jerry said.

“You will?”

“It’s the only way I’m getting this project up and running, Liv. So, you’ll be on it. Consider yourself lucky.”

My stomach twisted with mixed emotions. I was excited to be on the project. I wasn’t sure why I was on it. I forced myself not to think about our moment in the elevator, but the technology Jerry was working on was big. It could change so many lives, and that was what I’d wanted to do all along. Yeah, so my boss wasn’t a nice guy, but if I did this, it would be something I could add to my resume moving forward, too.

It would be a win for everybody.

“You look pleased,” Jerry said.

I nodded. “I’m excited about the possibility—”

“Don’t be,” Jerry cut me off.

“What?”

“He’s just after you,” he scoffed and waved his hand as if to dismiss the thought. “You can’t add anything of value to the project.”

I bit my tongue not to argue with him.

“I’m warning you now, Liv, watch out for this guy.”

“You keep saying that, but I didn’t see anything about him that was dangerous,” I said.
