He frowned at the phone before he pressed it against his ear.

“Yeah?” He listened for a moment, his face becoming serious. “I’ll be right there.” He ended the call. “Sorry, ladies. I have a security issue to take care of.”

He left the office in a hurry without saying another word, and I stayed behind with Carletta.

“I have work to get to, too,” I excused myself, but Carletta caught my wrist.

Her fingers were thin and cold, although it was a warm summer’s evening. Her magic hummed against my skin before it coughed and sputtered as if it stumbled.

“Stay a moment longer,” she urged. “I want to get to know you.” Her power rose around me, getting thicker and thicker as if I was in a sauna. It became pressing, making it harder to breathe.

She frowned. “Who are you?”

“What?” I asked. My stomach turned to stone. “What do you mean?”

Carletta squeezed her eyes shut.

“I don’t mean anything,” she said. She let go of my wrist, and the magic died down again. She tapped a finger against her temple. “Paranoia creeps up on me sometimes, you know?”

I didn’t know, but I didn’t say anything.

“Sit down, let’s have a chat, just us girls.”

I wasn’t sure what to do. I didn’t really know what to say to her, and her magic made me nervous. Something about her was very off.

“Okay.” I sat down. I couldn’t just walk out on her, could I? She was the alpha’s sister, but a part of me was also nervous about how she would react if I just rejected her and left.

“You and Jameson seem to get along pretty well,” Carletta said.

I hesitated, choosing my words carefully. “He’s a very reasonable boss.”

Carletta laughed, and the sound was clear like a bell, skipping around me.

“That’s a very diplomatic answer.”

“It’s true. He’s challenging me, letting me do things that aren’t technically in my job description. I think he wants me to learn.”

“Is that what you think?”

I frowned. “Did I think wrong?”

Carletta studied me. Her face was serious, but her eyes still danced with laughter.

“Jameson doesn’t take anyone under his wing. He always says it’s not his job.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“No… you seem to have a good dynamic with him.”

“We get along, if that’s what you mean.”

“That’s what I mean,” Carletta confirmed. “Do you know who he is?”

“The alpha?” I asked. It was a strange thing to ask.

“Well, yes,” Carletta said. “But he’s also the brother of a lost sister, a man in mourning.”

I nodded slowly. “I heard something about that.”
