“You still haven’t found a new job?”
“No. And...” I wrinkled my nose, hating to admit the truth to her. “If I don’t find something in three days, I’m going to have to move.”
“Oh, no.Caro amico,why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to bring anyone down.”
“Well, now that I know...how can I help?”
“Actually, that’s why I called. I have an interview today at one and I was looking for something to wear.”
“I would love to lend you something, but I’m all the way in Paris until Sunday.”
“Well, I was going through my closet, and I found one of your dresses, the burgundy one you wore the last time we went out?”
“Oh, yes. I remember, I’d drank way too much, and you let me crash there, then let me borrow some clothes for the next day so I didn’t look like I was doing the walk of shame. I still have your jeans and that cute top.”
“I wanted to see if you’d mind if I wore the dress today.”
“That dress? For a job interview?”
“I know, but I think it will work.”
“What kind of job interview requires a cocktail dress?”
I hesitated before answering. “The kind at Signora Delphine’s...”
“Oh, I see.”
“It would just be temporary, to help me get back on my feet while I try to find something else. I probably won’t even get the job. I just wanted to make sure that I exhausted every option before giving up.”
“Well, I doubt this is the kind of job to get youon your feet,”she teased, and I blushed.“But they would be stupid and half blind not to hire a knockout like you.”
I grinned at her confidence in me. “So, you don’t mind me borrowing the dress?”
“Not at all.”
“Thank you so much.”
“It’s no problem. I just wish there was more that I could do.”
“This is plenty, trust me. Thank you, Soph.”
“You’re welcome. Paolo is calling for me, so I need to go but let me know how the interview goes.”
“I will.Mille grazie, Sophie. And have a great trip.”
“Grazie, bella. Ciao.”
We ended the call and I hurried to get ready.
Chapter 2
Aurora
When I stepped out into the elegant fourth-floor lobby, it looked less like an office and more like something from a four-star hotel. An extremely beautiful woman with her hair pinned in a neat bun sat, talking on the phone, behind the reception desk.
“Yes, sir. I have you scheduled for Saturday at eleven with Isabella. I’m sure she is looking forward to it as well.” She held up one finger and offered me a polite smile. “Yes, sir...Thank you, sir. Have a wonderful day. Thank you.Ciao.” She ended the call and turned to me with a sweet smile. “Ciao, how may I help you?”
