He looks at her dazed and confused, and it’s the very distraction that I need to send his sword flying from his hand, and get the tip of my own pointed at his chest.

“Can you remove it?” I ask Raven.

She shakes her head, looking at Lucas. “I’m afraid not. The spell that was put on him was made by a head witch. I don’t have enough power to change it.

“Then we have to find whoever put the spell on him and have her remove it.”

Raven clears her throat, looking first to Angel and Embry and then to me. “Or you could. It would be a lot faster.”

My eyes go wide. “Come again?”

She nods. “You have the power. I can feel it, Tansia. I’m not sure how you do, but it’s there, coursing through your blood, just like any of us. Use it to change Lucas back.”

The minute she says it, all the pieces floating in my mind fall into place. Lucianna’s prophecy from the Vade Mecum, Matilda’s spell giving me the power of the witches on the third day, today. Her warning, that my powers of sight and her spellwould allow me to save the underworld. “Tell me how, Raven. I’ll do it.”

“Fucking traitor witches!” Isala screams, causing Raven to wave her wand and threatening to send Isala back to a silent state yet again. I grab her wand. “Wait, not yet,” I tell her. “Show me how to change Lucas back.”

“Repeat after me.

With this wand, the sky will storm

Every soul changed will soon return

Back to their intended and natural form…

I repeat the words, but even after a third time, nothing happens. “What is it, what am I doing wrong?” I ask her.

She scowls. “The witch who put a spell on you. Did she tell you that you had a choice? Or did she just cast a spell? Did she say anything?” she asks.

“No, she said in three days I would have the powers I need to save the underworld and that my choices would lead the way.”

Raven nods. “That’s it! And you chose to be turned, to leave your human form, the form that she put a spell on. You may still have the remnants of her words coursing through your veins, but you do not have the heartfelt desire to be a witch, which is what was needed in order for your power to take hold. It was a test. She believes you were a witch in a previous life and wanted to see which way your heart would take you.”

“The vampires win. Matilda thought she could turn your allegiance by simply giving you the option, creating the magic within you, and giving you a reason to use it. But your allegiance to the vampires was too strong for the magic of her wand.”

I look at the vampire now backed against the wall and at the point of my sword. “What do we do with him?”

Raven sighs. “With everything that’s happened, the only one I feel comfortable going to is Devora. She’s a head witch, andshe’ll know exactly what to do. Not to mention, we’re kinda close. She’d do anything for me.”

Embry rolls her eyes. “Great! Now we’re going to owe that cackling hag again.”

Raven glares at her. “Would you prefer to see Lucas run through by the point of a blade and branded as a traitor? If not, we need to go. We’ll take him there tonight.”

“Raven and Embry, can you take care of things for Lucas? I’ll clean up the mess here and give Master Calabrea an update. He can call Overmaster Descallia.”

Embry presses a button on her phone. “Fuck protocol,” she says, pausing before someone answers the line.

“Better tell Overmaster Descallia to sit the fuck down for this news. Raven, Tansia and I are out at the warehouse where Isala is being kept. Lucas has been acting all kinds of weird lately. I followed him tonight, and he came here to the warehouse. I thought maybe he was going to try to get Isala to talk, but it turns out, some head witch put a spell on him. He tried to kill her to keep her mouth shut. Tansia was here trying to stop him when I arrived.”

There’s a pause while someone else speaks, but Embry doesn’t listen for long. “Yeah, I think that’s a good idea. Raven will take Lucas and me to Devora’s, but I wanted to check in to make sure that’s what we want to do. We’re going to owe the old hag again, but Raven can’t lift the spell, and Devora’s the only one she trusts.”

Embry nods her head while listening. “Okay, but one last thing. We think Matilda from Calabrea’s region must be in on the cue. She put a spell on Tansia. It didn’t work because she was turned, but just the same.”

I look at Angel in exasperation. Seriously, all this chatter when we need to be moving before the witches get onto us anddecide to take things into their own hands before we can get Lucas to Devora.

“Right. Okay, we’ll wait here until Master Calabrea gets here for Tansia, and then we’ll take Lucas to Devora’s,” Embry says, finally disconnecting.

But Raven’s eyes have suddenly gone wide, and Embry’s go just as wide as she turns to see what Raven’s looking at.
