“Okay,” he said, placing a spanner back on the workbench and slapping my back. “Let’s get this over with.”

Donna had obviously sensed my mood swing again. She didn’t say anything, but I felt her gentleness in my mind. How would she take this news?

“There are so many cute dresses on here. There’s just one thing.”

Jeanie studied me questioningly.

“I never did like dressing up. Can I rock up in jeans, or maybe my pjs?” I ended my question on a high note.

“Sorry, love. Not this time. You’re a beautiful young woman. And just imagine leaving Antoine speechless when he sees you all dressed up.”

She had a point. And if I teased him enough, perhaps he’d strip me out of the dress when we got home.

I scrolled through endless pages, hoping something would leap out at me. My finger hovered over a black dress with silver thread running through it. It was figure-hugging, with a slash up one side, going from mid-thigh to ankle. It was off-the-shoulder and sleeveless, classy, sexy, and not over-the-top.

“This one is great,” I said, with my finger poised over the picture.

“Let me take a better look.” Jeanie took the laptop from me and studied it closely, her eyes going between the picture and me.

“Yes, I think you’re right. Let’s order this. Then we can search for accessories, including shoes.”

“Cool. Now it’s your turn.”

Antoine was unsettled and angry. I’d picked up on his emotions, but he’d assured me everything was okay. He’d closed himself off to me. I couldn’t help but think that something was seriously wrong. I refocused on searching for Jeanie’s perfect outfit. She finally chose a sea green nineteen-fifties style dress. It suited her colouring to perfection. We were just finishing off our accessory orders when Antoine and Mac came in, both sporting grim expressions.

“What’s up?” I asked.

“Gustav is up to his old tricks. People have gone missing on the edge of our border with the De Laurentis brothers’ territory.”

Jeanie whimpered, and I held her hand, squeezing it. I could feel a tremor of fear run through her. My protective side came out to play. If anyone tried to harm any of my new family, they’d be dead.

“Oh.” I stood up. “Does this mean we need to go out and hunt him down?”

It should have scared me how enthusiastic I was about killing another living thing. It was as if becoming a Hybrid had fuelled my rage to see them dead, so they couldn’t harm others. I wondered what else Antoine was going to tell us. Whatever it was, I’d make sure I was prepared to face it head-on.

My woman was certainly ready for action, and not afraid either. I watched her body language change from relaxed to protective. She held Jeanie’s hand to give her comfort. She always worried when I had to go out tracking demons and their familiars.

“No, babe. Not now. We think he might try to ambush us either to or from the ball.”

“Then he’d better watch out,” Donna warned.

I looked at Jeanie and saw fear in her eyes.

“Karl who’s an awesome fighter will be driving us, and unmated Hybrids will be all along our route. He won’t get to us.” I looked at Jeanie as I said this, hoping to reassure her.

“It looks like everything is covered. Will the brothers give us final travel details?” Mac asked.

“Yes, in a few days. I just want to assure you that we will be in no danger.”

“Antoine’s right,” Mac agreed, sending a gentle smile his wife’s way. “We’ll be safe with all the security around us. A demon would have to be stupid to try anything.”
