“How do you mean?” She pretended to take an interest in some bedding plants while looking around.

“It’s as if the staff can’t see us.”

“Hold on. Let’s try out your theory.” She picked up a potted plant and headed over to one of the staff.

“Excuse me, young man.” No response.

I walked over and waved a hand in front of his face. Still no response.

“I don’t like this. Put the plant down and let’s head back to the car.”

“Will you tell Antoine?”

I hated the sound of fear in her voice.

“I’m on it.Antoine, are you getting this?”

“Yes. Are all the other employees the same?”

“I think so.”

Jeanie had taken my hand, and I squeezed it with reassurance. I was a little on edge but didn’t want her to sense it. Looking at all the people going about their business without seeing us was the creepiest thing ever.

“We’re on our way. Lilah’s coming with me. I’m leaving Mac at her place. There’s protection here. I don’t want to risk him getting caught up in this while trying to get home.”

We’d just reached the car park when Jeanie shrieked. Standing between us and the car were at least six minor demons and the same number of familiars. Where was Gustav?

“We might need a little extra help, Antoine. There are twelve minor demons and thralls between us and the fucking car. I’m going to take to the skies.”

My wings appeared from my back. I went to pull Jeanie closer to me when she was ripped from my grasp. She let out a blood-curdling scream. My body went cold. My newfound friend was in the clutches of something straight from hell. Seven feet tall, covered in purple scales and a long, pointed tail. Two giant fangs protruded from his mouth. The worst part was, his clawed hands were firmly wrapped around Jeanie’s waist.

“Gustav’s got Jeanie! Hurry!”

“Just coming. Karl, Sacha, Luca, and Sal should be there soon too. Hold on.”

“Let her go, Gustav.”

“Why? She’ll make a wonderful pet for me, and hell can have her soul.”

“If you hurt her you’ll be sorry, asshole.”

I was stalling for time, and I saw that the others were heading towards me. This wasn’t good. I glanced at Gustav again and noted that Jeanie had fainted. At least she couldn’t see what was happening.

Two of the demons ran at me. I shot up in the air and they chased after me. I turned mid-air and charged at them, claws, and fangs ready to tear them to bits. I acted on instinct, clawing and biting at anything I could get hold of. I tore at their wings, bit their flesh. They were scratching and biting me too. The pain was excruciating, but I needed to focus on killing, or at least maiming them.

“We’re here.”

Antoine. Thank God. His voice soothed me, but I had to remain focused on what I was doing. I could hear battles raging all around me. The screams of the dying creatures hung eerily in the air around us. The smell of sulphur, and the sounds of chants to release souls was everywhere.

One of the demons tried to claw my wings. I launched at his jugular and let my venom fill his veins. He fell to the ground screaming and growling. The other one scraped his claws across my stomach. I howled with pain but knew I had to concentrate on killing him too. I pretended to slump. The stupid fool fell for it. He went in for the kill, but I was too quick. I clutched him within my claws and sank my fangs into his face. He fell to the ground like his companion had a moment before.

Looking around, I could see all twelve of the demons and familiars were either dead or dying. Holy water was sprinkled on them and more chants and prayers to release their souls. When I landed, I went straight to Antoine. He had several cuts, but they were already beginning to heal. He placed a hand on my stomach.

“I’m okay,” I panted. “My skin’s already knitting back together.”

“Well, that was an interesting little encounter. Damn, girl. You really know how to kick ass.” Luca grinned at me.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
