“Now!” Donna shouted as she placed Jeanie on the ground.

Gustav paused momentarily, his eyes going to our Hybrid companions who descended from the air to attack Gustav’s allies.

“What a stupid mistake you’ve made, fucker,” I growled.

And then Donna was upon him with me, her claws and fangs raking as much of his flesh as she could.

“They all screamed, you know. Your parents. Your friends. They all died in extreme agony. All. Your. Fault.” He spat the words out.

“Not. My. Fault,” she countered. “You did this. Now you’re going to pay.”

He was weaker now, his fight not as fierce.

“Are you ready?”I asked her.

“Yes.”

“Hang onto him with your claws because he’ll fight. Then with me, sink your fangs into his neck and do not let go until he’s dead. Now!”

And together, we filled his disgusting body with our venom and angel blood. He howled, screamed, and tore at us with renewed vigour. But we held on. His screams got less, until he was quiet and stopped moving altogether.

“It’s over. Release your fangs.”

We were a bloodied mess, and for the first time in a long time, I was bone tired. I pulled the holy water from my pocket and spilled it over his rotting corpse. I chanted the incantation, and Donna repeated it after me. He turned to dust before our eyes, and then into nothing. I poured the remaining holy water on the ground where he’d fallen.

“Is it really over?” Donna asked as she leant against me.

“Yeah.” I kissed her head. “It is.”

Donna

I couldn’t believe it was over. After the fight, I didn’t really know what to expect. Elation? Victory? Revenge? All I felt was empty inside. I held Jeanie in my arms while we sat on the ground, watching the other Hybrids complete the clean-up. She was still out of it, but in a healing sleep that Antoine had put her in. It was for the best until we could get her home.

Lilah had already headed back to her territory and assured us she’d ride in the truck home with Mac. He’d be safe after Gustav’s death. Antoine assured me the demonic activity on our territory would be non-existent… for a while at least. As I watched the other Hybrids take to the sky, Antoine walked over to me. We were all a mess, clothing ripped, the stench of demon blood on us.

“As soon as we get home, we’ll shower and burn the clothing. Do you want me to take Jeanie?”

I shook my head and held her closer. “I’ll do it. Is it always like this, Antoine?”

“How do you mean?” he asked as he hunkered down next to me.

“Like an anti-climax. You’ve won the battle, killed the bad guy, but it’s all flat.”

He stroked my hair away from my face. “Killing things, even though they’re evil, is never a great feeling. I think if we felt elated, that would be wrong.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“Come on,” he said, getting up and spreading his wings. “Let’s get home.”

Mac was waiting for us when we arrived. His face was ashen, but there was relief in his eyes. I took Jeanie through to their bedroom and helped her to wake.

“Has he gone? Are we safe?” Her eyes were wide.

“Yes, he’s gone. We can all sleep better knowing he’s dead.”

She sobbed, and I left Mac to take care of her. He caught me by the hand. I studied his face.
