The team gets into formation and runs the play again, doing much better. I clap my hands, telling them they have to do it right three times in a row before they get a break. They collectively groan.

“Coach Decker would have you do it more than that!”

Maybe that’s the problem. I’m too damn easy on them, but I’m only filling in for two weeks while Logan and Sailor are on their honeymoon. I don’t want these kids to despise me. I want their respect.

“It’s ninety degrees out here, Robbie,” Wade points out the obvious. “Let’s call it a day and go grab a beer at Phoebe’s.”

Wade knows how much I love the Coree Harbor Bar and Grille. We’re there pretty much on a daily basis.

“When they run it again, I’ll call it.”

Lucky for them, they do, so rather than just a break, I end the practice. By the time we get all the equipment stored, the sun has set and my stomach is growling.

“Ready for that beer?” Wade asks.

“Hell yes. And a cheeseburger too. Maybe even wings.”

I make sure all the kids are picked up and head to my truck. They’re a good group. State champs last season. I’d like to think I played a role in their successful season.

When we arrive at the Grille, I’m relieved there’s not a wait. Phoebe, the owner, seats us at our usual spot. Logan is usually with us, the three of us going over the playbooks until either Phoebe kicks us out or Sailor calls Logan home.

“You’ve got to loosen up some, man. You’re acting like a drill sergeant.”

“No, I’m acting like their coach. I’m not going to let Logan down when he trusts me.”

“When was the last time you got laid?”

His question catches me off guard. Before I can answer, he says, “Damn, it’s been that long, huh? That’s your problem.”

“It’s also none of your business.”

“Ah, it’s been really long. Well, take a look around, my friend. You just might find someone desperate enough.”

I roll my eyes and try to focus my attention back to the playbook, but he snatches it from my grasp and slams it shut.

“No more football tonight. Women?that’s where our focus is.”

I’d love to argue with him and tell him we need to work on some new plays, but my attention has been captured by the beautiful brunette who just walked in. She glances around a moment, our eyes lock for a split second, then she takes a seat at the bar.

Okay, I’m the one who needs to work on some new plays. Wade is right. It’s been way too long.

CARLY

This is almost too damn easy. We locked eyes for maybe two seconds. Two freaking seconds. And he’s already on his way over to the bar. I guarantee he’ll drop some corny pickup line or buy me some fruity drink. That shit may have worked on Candy, but I’m not falling for it. Can’t seem too easy.

“Hey. My name’s Robbie,” he says, flashing me a perfect smile as he takes a seat beside me. “Listen, I’m just going to be straightforward. I saw you come in and knew you were going to make a huge mistake.”

I fight the urge to roll my eyes. “What mistake is that?”

“You were going to sit at this bar and munch on the peanuts instead of ordering the hot wings.”

I laugh before I can stop myself. “Is that right?”

“That’s right. Don’t resist the urge. Phoebe’s wings are phenomenal. Of course, I’m more of a cheeseburger guy.”

He’s charming. Sexy in this subtle way that sneaks up on you. I can see why Candy fell for him.

“I like cheeseburgers, but I’m more of a club sandwich girl.”
