“Give me five minutes.” Katie jogged down the hall and Connor got up to follow her, leaving Maci and me alone in the kitchen.

Maci crossed her arms in front of her chest and leaned against the wall. I took in the sight of her and wished we had spent a few more minutes in my bedroom. Now that I had her, I wanted her even more than I had before.

She bit the inside of her cheek, and I knew she was getting into her head.

“What’s up, Mace?” I prompted softly.

Her eyes widened and she shook her head. “Nothing, I’m good.”

“You’re lying.” I smiled and took a few steps toward her.

She glanced down at my bare chest before meeting my gaze. “I’m fine.”

I cupped her chin and pressed my lips gently against hers. When I pulled away, her right dimple dug into her cheek.

“Don’t get into your head about this, okay?” I whispered in case Connor or Katie came back down the hall. “We’ll talk later.”

“Ready?” Katie yelled from the front door and peered in our direction.

Connor came back down the hall pulling on a fresh T-shirt. From the flustered expression on Katie’s face, it was no surprise that Connor wore a massive grin. They loved to mess around in any of the spare moments they had before they left each other.

I watched Maci walk out the door with Katie behind her. It felt a little weird to be away from her after we spent last night and this morning together. I shook my head, and when I turned around, Connor stared at me with an innocent look on his face.

“I’m trying really hard not to be nosey,” Connor admitted.

“Yes, I slept with Maci last night,” I stated. “No, I have no idea what that means. No, I haven’t talked to Bryson, and I have no idea what comes next. Did I leave anything out?”

“Doesn’t having no idea what that means and having no idea what comes next mean the same thing?”

I pondered his question before I answered. “I guess that just emphasizes how much I don’t know.” I shrugged and fell onto the living room couch.

“I was gonna go over to the other condo to chill. Jared went over there earlier this morning, and I’m assuming Kennedy is there too. Wanna come?”

“Let me change, and I’ll be ready.” I forced myself up and ran into the bedroom. I took a quick shower before putting on clean sweatpants and a shirt. I grabbed a hoodie just in case and sprayed a few pumps of cologne.

Connor was waiting for me by the front door when I returned to the living room. We walked across the parking lot to the second condo and knocked on the door. Heather answered and instantly lit up when she noticed I was standing behind Connor.

I followed Connor inside and brushed past Heather without giving her any acknowledgment. I could only deal with one issue at a time today—that issue being the conversation I had to have with Bryson.

Jared was sitting on the couch with Brad playing Call of Duty. Aaliyah and one of the girls from last night were at the dining room table, scrolling through their phones. Heather joined them when she realized I had no intention of speaking to her.

Bryson emerged from one of the bedrooms and slapped hands with Jared as he rounded the couch. “What’s up?” he asked when he noticed Connor and I were there.

“Not much, man.” Connor took the empty seat in the recliner. “Good night?”

Bryson grinned. “Not too bad.”

Reagan entered the living room and did a double take when she noticed new arrivals. “Hey, Jax.” She smiled and padded into the kitchen.

My stomach sank as another girl I hooked up with went into the dining area. Being around so many past experiences after I had just slept with Maci was a little unsettling.

I walked past the group of girls and kept my eyes forward. I needed some air and made a beeline for the deck. I looked out at the view of the lake and watched the waves crash into the rocks below. It was a nice view as I tried to get out of my head.

It was chilly being so close to the water. I slipped on my hoodie and took one of the seats at the end of the deck. My eyes drifted closed, and I focused on the sounds of the waves. I pictured Maci at brunch with Katie and wondered how that conversation was going. It had only been half an hour, and I already couldn’t wait to see her again.

The door to the deck slid open, and I prayed that it wasn’t Heather or Reagan coming out to take advantage of the fact that I was alone.

Bryson appeared holding an energy drink and a lighter. He shut the door behind him and took the empty chair next to me. He set his drink down on the side table that separated us and popped the tab.
