“Did you stay with Maci last night?” he asked casually.

While I appreciated him taking the pressure off of me by starting the conversation, he completely caught me off guard. Now I had little time to think through what I was going to say.

“She left right after you last night and you didn’t come back,” he added like it was something anyone would notice.

“Yeah.” I swallowed, and a grin spread across his face. He knew there was more—that was the whole reason he asked me the way he did. When he took a sip of his drink and his grin reappeared, I decided to continue. “I slept with her.”

“Damn.” He smirked playfully and shook his head. “Well, we went two years without bagging the same leech. It had to happen eventually.”

He was completely unbothered by the confession, and I wasn’t sure why I thought he would react any differently. I took a deep breath and prepared to tell the story from the beginning, but he beat me to the next line.

“What’s up, man? Something’s off.”

“Last night wasn’t the first time I hooked up with Maci,” I admitted.

He took another sip of his drink. “You’ve slept with her before?”

“No, I almost did. But I stopped it before it went that far.”

An amused look spread across his face, and he waited for me to continue.

“Maci was the girl you told me to sleep with that night you guys went to Columbus,” I said.

“Halloween weekend?” Bryson raised his eyebrows, and I watched him think through the timeline. “Shit . . .” His eyes widened, and I laughed. “Literally the next day?” He stood up so he could pace. Bryson never sat still when he thought through something. “That’s why you asked me about Stephanie.”

I nodded, and my shoulders relaxed. “I didn’t know how to bring this up, man. The timing was weird.”

“You like her,” he said. It came out sounding like a question he hesitated to ask. “And you just watched me hook up with her?”

“I didn’t expect you to keep her around for five months, dog!” I said sarcastically and tilted my head.

Bryson howled with laughter. “But why didn’t you say anything?” he asked, his voice going up three notches.

“I didn’t know how to bring it up. There really wasn’t anything to say after I saw that you slept with her. There was no reason to mention it. And then the longer you hooked up with her, the harder it was to bring up,” I explained.

He lost it again, and I couldn’t help but laugh at his reaction.

“Well, you won’t get any comments from me, man,” he said once we stopped laughing. “You’ve got a thing for her, right?”

“I don’t even fucking know,” I admitted.

This was territory both of us said we would never enter. I liked Maci a lot, but I didn’t know where to go from here or what this meant for us. Usually by now, I was ushering a girl out of my room or driving away from hers with no intention of calling.

“Well like I said, I’m good with it.” He shrugged. “Just one last comment and then I’m done. You won’t hear anything else from me when it comes to her.” He sat back down, and I stared at him. “That ass though, right?”

I pushed his shoulder and shook my head. An involuntary laugh escaped my chest. I expected no other way of ending this topic.

“There was a reason it was five months,” he teased and stood up so he was out of my reach. “Good for you, man. That’s all I’m gonna say.”

He lit a Black & Mild and offered me a hit. I took it, and we spent the next hour bullshitting about things like nothing had changed.

Clearing things up with Bryson was something I dreaded doing for a while, but that was nothing compared to what I had to do next.

I had to figure out what I was doing with Maci.
