“Jaxon or Morgan Freeman?” She grinned.

“Either one!” I exclaimed.

Fun Dip, pong balls, and the ingredients for making Blood Orange Sangria. The only thing missing was Morgan.

Chapter10

Jaxon

October 2015

Brysonand the guys planned to leave for Ohio State around five, which gave me an hour to tell them that I couldn’t go. Helping Maci with her car had set me back a little bit with my schedule, and I had just finished up an essay that was due tomorrow morning.

It was kind of nice knowing I wouldn’t have to endure the two-and-a-half-hour car ride to Columbus. We were going to stay with some guy named Michael, a friend of Connor’s from high school. We’d go out, cause havoc, get some girls, and then wake up tomorrow morning to drive back to BG to do it all over again.

The whole process sounded exhausting as I stared at my blank phone screen. It was now four o’clock, and I was actually looking forward to hanging out with Maci and her friends. It would be low-key and a change of pace from the chaos that happened in my apartment.

I got out of bed and slipped on some basketball shorts. Connor and Jared were in the living room playing Call of Duty while Bryson was laying pizza rolls out on a baking pan and drinking a beer.

“You want some, bro?” He pointed to the bag.

“I’m good.” I shook my head. “My stomach has been in knots all day. I don’t know if I’m gonna go to Columbus.”

“Are you sick?” He pulled out two more beers from the fridge and passed me one. “Drink that.” He nodded to the bottle. “See if it helps.”

I could tell by his voice that he knew I was lying. We were better friends than that, and I didn’t understand why I was lying in the first place.

“J, if you don’t wanna come, it’s cool. Just promise me you’ll get some butt from that broad you’ve been hanging out with.” He smiled and sipped his beer.

I popped the top off of my bottle and took a sip. “It’s not like that with her, man.” There was only one perspective Bryson could look at for it to make sense. “That girl from high school you’re friends with, would youevertap that?”

“Stephanie?” His eyes narrowed, and he shook his head. “Naw, man. I don’t see her that way. I knew I’d treat her like all the other leeches I’ve slept with once I hooked up with her.”

Bryson and I shared a very similar process when it came to the morning-after. We simply didn’t do it.

“Same concept.” I shrugged. “We’re pretty good friends. If I try to hook up with her, that's it.”

“You haven’t slept with her yet?” He raised his eyebrows. “All the times you’ve hung out at her crib?”

“I’ve thought about it,” I admitted. “I just know how it goes. I have class with her the rest of the semester, and I just don’t want to deal with that.”

Bryson drained the rest of his beer. “You’re running out of time before your window closes. Once she friend-zones your ass, you lose your chance.”

He wasn’t wrong. There were plenty of other girls to hook up with in Bowling Green. I didn’t have to risk ruining things with one I actually liked.

“Yo, man, come on!” Jared screamed from the couch and threw his controller into the cushion.

Connor laughed hysterically and poured two shots of Jack Daniel’s. He clapped and watched Jared down both of them. Then he turned to Bryson and yelled, “Kennedy, when are we heading out?”

Jared muttered something under his breath, and Connor snatched the bottle from his hand and poured another shot. Jared switched on the surround sound, and the base flooded through the speakers.

“Don’t come if you don’t want to, man,” Bryson said over the music. “But I swear if you aren’t smashing cheeks tonight, you owe me a bottle of Jack.”

“I oweyoua bottle if I don’t get laid?”

“It’s for your own good.” He took his hat off and ran a hand through his hair. “If this girl doesn’t work out, you’ll bag another one tomorrow.”
