“Katie, that’s enough vodka! Last time I checked, sangria doesn’t even have vodka!” I laughed and watched Katie pour a bottle of Smirnoff into my T.J. Maxx “steal of a deal” glass beverage dispenser. Something about it made me feel like my life was way more put together than it actually was.

“It’s the surprise kicker of the beverage,” Katie tried to argue without laughing.

“Yes,” I said. “The surprise being that you won’t remember a damn thing after you have a few glasses.”

Just as Katie secured the lid on the dispenser, Lucas, Sam, and Sam’s boyfriend, Owen, walked into our apartment.

“What’s up bitches!” Sam exclaimed, leading with a bottle of Fireball and a six-pack of hard cider.

“Owen! Come try my drink!” Katie lit up and ran to the TV to turn on her iconic Drunk Betch playlist. It was always a crowd favorite.

“Damn. I’m officially replaced by my boyfriend.” Sam pouted and gave me a hug.

“Consider it a compliment, love.” I snatched his bottle of Fireball and snuck into the kitchen for some shot glasses.

“Damn!” Sam threw his hands up. “And you just want me for my shots!”

“Consider it a compliment, love.” I laughed, and we clinked glasses. I didn’t even react to the familiar taste of fire and cinnamon. It tasted like another Friday night at BG.

Sam and I met in one of my English classes. Our degrees shared an English minor, and once we recognized each other from one of our classes, we realized we actually had a ton together. He made me laugh, and we hated the same people in our minor. It was an instant friendship.

I took a seat at the counter and watched Sam return with two glasses of Katie’s vodka-infused sangria. Sam took a swig of his drink and stared at me. “So when does your boo thing get here?”

“Katie!” I whined and rolled my eyes.

She shrugged unapologetically and carried on with her conversation.

“He’s just a friend,” I spoke slowly and sipped on my sangria. I winced when the mixture hit the back of my throat. “Lord almighty, Katie.”

“I’ll just wait until he gets here to judge.” Sam shrugged. He turned to the door when Hilary and Brenna walked in. Mason and Pete followed in almost immediately after.

It didn’t take long for people to make themselves at home. The counter was overloaded with different liquor bottles, and our fridge was packed full of beers and fruity beverages.

A game of Flip Cup began at the dining table. My team was on a three-game winning streak, and I was starting to get a good buzz. I emptied my cup and did one final flip to give us our fourth win. Brenna, Mason, and Owen all exchanged high-fives, and we laughed as the other team sulked.

“Damnit!” Sam screeched. “Sit your ass down, Maci!”

I laughed and shook my shoulders to the music. “Timber” by Pitbull flooded the speakers, and Katie and I immediately pointed to each other from across the table. We sang the words in sync and threw our hands in the air. It was an unofficial end to our Flip Cup game.

“Go dance your way to get us some shots!” Pete pointed to the kitchen. “Let’s play Pong.” He looked at Mason and asked Owen and Sam if they wanted to play.

“We have winners then!” Brenna screamed and grabbed Hilary’s wrist.

Katie and I sang as we made up shots. We chose a mixture of Fireball and green apple vodka. I glanced up at the microwave and saw it was already ten. That gave us another hour or so until we headed out to the bars.

“Everyone, come get a shot!” Katie yelled over the music.

As soon as I grabbed one of each shot, there was a loud knock on the door.

“Come in!” I shouted. I knocked back my shot of green apple, and just as the bite hit the back of my throat, Jaxon walked into our apartment. I had to look ridiculous with the smile that showed up as soon as he did. But I didn’t care. He lookedgood.

He was wearing the black snapback he had on the day we met at Myles. He wore a solid white V-neck, dark wash jeans, and red Converse. It was the first time I’d seen him in anything other than basketball shorts and a T-shirt.

I padded across the living room carpet and smiled up at him. “Shot?”
