“My name is Ellie.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “And I’m not lying.” She huffed.

“Alright, angel. Stick with your lie. But you better make it good. Because you see that cop walking through the door? He’s better than any lie detector machine.”

Ellie swallowed, as a man in blue, who looked an awful lot like Colt, walked towards their table. “You called the cops?”

Colt stood up, planted his hands on the table in front of her and leaned down, until they were nose to nose. “A beautiful woman orders an Angel Shot with lime in my bar, I call 9-1-1. No questions asked. You, angel, ordered that drink. I called 9-1-1. And we both know it was not an accident.”

Ellie flinched, as she watched a muscle tighten and flex along Colt’s jawline. How a stranger could read her so well was unnerving. “I said I was sorry. Itwasan accident.”

A small smile tugged at the corners of Colt’s lips. “Angel, I don’t know what your secret is. But I do know you have one. You’re going to have to trust someone. And I hope that someone will be me.”

CHAPTER FIVE

After introducing his brother, Officer Zak Garrett, to Ellie, Colt turned on his heel and headed back to the bar.

“You’re going to have to trust someone. And I hope that someone is me.”

He cringed, as the words he’d said to her played back in his head. What had he been thinking? Well, the answer wasn’t exactly a headscratcher. He hadn’t been thinking. Lust had overtaken his brain.

Pure, unadulterated lust.

As he flipped up the bar countertop, he glanced over at Ellie’s table. In blistering silence, he watched Zak flash her one of his toothy wolf-smiles. To stop from hopping back over the bar and punching his beloved baby brother in the mouth, he forced himself to turn around.

He went to work, cuing up the video footage from the previous hour. Four people stood out. A middle-aged woman, sitting at the end of the bar, batting long, fake eyelashes at every man who walked by. She definitely didn’t pose a threat to Ellie. Also, a man in his early seventies, who was sitting across from the middle-aged woman, trying like hell to get her attention. Heaven help the man if the cougar got a hold of him, but as far as Ellie was concerned, he meant her no harm.

It was the two thug-looking bikers who had him grinding his back teeth. One was positioned near the entrance to the bathrooms and the back exit. The other, right by the front door.

Fuck.

As he started freezing frames and sending the shots to his printer, to hand over to his brother, he caught an image of Ellie on the dance floor. He rewound the tape, zoomed in closer and hit play. Damn, she was beautiful! Long, thick, blonde hair. A body with lush curves, swaying to the beat of the music. And a smile that literally took his breath away. Ten seconds later, her smile faded and every ounce of color drained from her pretty face. Chewing the inside of his cheek, he flicked a couple of buttons, added some screens and followed her line of sight.

The biker was licking his lips and smiling…at her.

Son of a bitch! He was right.

Heat crawled up his neck and set his insides on fire. Someone had come into his bar and threatened Ellie on his watch.

“Whoa.” Serenity walked past him and whistled.

“What?” Colt barked, resisting the urge to smash his fist into the bar.

“Your face.”

“What’s wrong with my face?”

“You look like you want to kill someone. Hey, why is your brother here talking to Lizzie and her friend?”

Colt looked over his shoulder to see Zak still talking with Ellie and Lizzie. “The girl ordered an Angel Shot with lime.”

“Get out. Is she okay?”

“She says she made a mistake.”

“You believe her?”

“Do you? Would you ‘accidently’ order a drink that really isn’t a drink, but is a message that you were in dire trouble and needed the police?”

“Of course not. What do you think happened?”
