I close my eyes, allowing the darkness to take hold of me, praying Connor always remembers how much I loved him.

* * *

I heara beeping noise in the distance, but I can’t grasp what exactly it is, my mind is fogging. I moan, but my throat feels raw, and it hurts.

What is wrong with me?

“Baby girl, can you hear me?”

Conner. Connor is here with me, everything is okay.I allow sleep to take me again.

I open my eyes and immediately see Connor sleeping in a chair, while holding my hand. I look around and realize I’m in a hospital room.

What happened?I think to myself. Why am I here?

I must have made a noise, because Connor immediately wakes up and looks at me.

“Baby girl, you're awake. Thank God.”

I lift the oxygen mask off my face, “What happened?” I ask, my voice sounding awful and my throat hurting.

“Put the mask back on. You were in a house fire. Do you remember anything?”

I think back, then remember Sharon.

“Sharon,” I croak, and he nods.

“I was at the fire department with Tyson when the call came in about a house fire and your address. When we got there, she was outside, watching your house burn. She tried to stop us from saving you.”

I shake my head, tears filling my eyes, not only for me, but for Tyson as well. I know how much he loved her.

Just then, the doctor comes in, “Hello Ms. Holland, how are you feeling?”

“My throat hurts,” I croak out.

“That’s to be expected, but your oxygen levels are in the normal range now, and you only have some minor burns. You were very lucky.”

I nod.

“I want you to take it easy, nothing strenuous for a few weeks, including work.” He looks pointedly at Connor, and Connor nods.

“Okay. When can I go home? Wait, I don’t have a home anymore,” this time the tears fall from my eyes.

“You are going to stay with me, baby. You will always have a home with me.”

This makes me cry harder.

“We will keep you another night, and you can leave tomorrow,” the doctor tells me, and I nod, still crying.

Connor climbs into the bed with me when the doctor leaves, holding me. “It’s okay, baby girl, let it out. I’ve got you.”

I cry for another twenty minutes before I’m completely spent and fall back asleep with Connor holding me. I know as long as he’s with me, everything will be okay.

The next day, before the doctor releases me, the nurses take more blood to run some tests, making sure I am okay.

The doctor comes in, holding my chart. “Ms. Holland, everything looks good, I just want to check one more thing before you go.”

“Okay,” I say with an uneasy feeling as the nurse comes in with an ultrasound machine.
