Amelia was used to jetting off from one place to the other. Greg always insisted that she go with him wherever he went. He was probably scared that she would try to escape at the first chance.

She had.

It took her five years to get a good plan in order, but she had succeeded.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Greg realized he had lost her. He wouldn’t mourn the wife but the control he had over her. That’s what really made Greg tick. Power. Having it. Taking it away. Lording it over.

Amelia was pleased that Wilder was nothing like that. Now, she was jetting off and away from London, but she didn’t know where she was going and what would happen to her.

With Wilder by her side, it could only be good.

There was nothing bad or dishonest about the man. She could easily read him, but he also took great care at being open with her—or, at the very least, what being open meant to him.

This was the kind of moment and relationship Amelia had dreamed of in her wildest fantasies. It was the kind of wooing she had thought out of her reach forever.

She’d been wrong.

There was no way to know how long this tryst with Wilder would last, but she had to imagine that if one good man existed, there had to be more out there.

“Amelia,” Wilder whispered.

“Huh?” she said without opening her eyes. She wasn’t asleep, but she had been resting her eyes while her mind went into hyperdrive.

“We’re going to be landing soon. I just need to…” He motioned toward the seat belt in his hand. With agility, he snaked it around her waist and strapped her into the seat. “There. All safe.”

“You can tell me where we are!”

He grinned. “Wouldn’t you rather know when the door opens? It’ll be quite a view.”

“You really overestimate my patience,” she teased.

“I’ll keep that in mind for all future surprises,” he teased right back.

Her heart gave a jolt. He was already preparing more surprises for her. What. A. Man. She laid her head back on his shoulder and let the moment sink into her. It was so easy to be around Wilder. She didn’t censor any of her thoughts. She didn’t even care if she said the wrong thing. Wilder thought she was just fine as she was.

It was refreshing.

More than that, it reminded Amelia that once, when she was a young girl, she’d been headstrong and confident. How could it be that a man pulled those long-forgotten qualities out of her? She thought it would take years of solitude and healing to get back to who she was before Greg.

“Thanks for this,” she whispered.

“Don’t thank me yet,” Wilder laughed. “You might not like it at all.”

“If I’m with you, then I will like it.” She felt his body tighten beside hers. Perhaps the compliment had been too bold for him, but she didn’t care. If she could like surprises, Wilder could get used to some compliments.

The landing was smooth, and before long, the plane door was opened. Wilder motioned for her to pass through first. The small staircase was steep, but that’s not what caught her attention. This particular airfield wasn’t in the middle of a busy metropolitan city.

They were surrounded by mountains and forests. It was breathtaking.

“Where are we?” she asked breathlessly.

“We’re in the French Alps. I own a little manor not too far from here. I figured I would show you around some of my favorite mountain trails. There’s a little village close to here that makes the best cheese. I thought you would enjoy it.”

She smiled so wide, her cheeks hurt. “This is lovely. Out of the city. Where I don’t feel like looking over my shoulder every two seconds.”

“Do you really feel like that? Even when I’m around?”

Amelia took her hand in his. “No. Not really. I know you could eat Greg for breakfast. You’re ten times the man he is. But even your wolf couldn’t be a match for ten lions, right?”
