“Angelo Isaac?” The guy looked my age but had a slim build. “Damn. This your house?” He looked around the edge of the door.

“Naw,” I said firmly. “Can I get the food though?”

“Right.” He handed it over but didn’t back away from the door. Before I could get it closed, I heard him say, “Can I get a selfie?”

I looked down at my bare chest and said, “Bruh.”

He raised his hand and said, “Right. My bad.” I shut the door behind me and made my way back to the kitchen.

“Does that happen often?” Gigi had a worried look on her face. “I should have answered the door.”

“You’re good.” I placed the bags on the counter and started lifting out the containers.

Gigi pulled plates from the cabinet and divvied out forks to each of us. Sitting at the counter with them felt as natural as breaking bread with my family. When we finished, Georgia and Tatiana disappeared.

“Thanks for breakfast,” Gigi said, making her way to the sink.

I walked behind her and tugged on her arm. “Hey, was this awkward for you?” Her homegirls’ questions and jokes filled the space while we ate, but she didn’t say much.

“No.” She shook her head. “It felt…” She pulled her arm from mine. “Natural.” Her lips twisted and her eyes shifted downward.

“And is that a bad thing?”

“Different.” She looked up to me. “Not bad.”

I leaned a little closer, caging her in with my arms. “I can do different,” I said before my lips landed on hers. It took a minute before her lips opened and she let my tongue explore. But when it did, I didn’t want to stop. I lifted her up onto the counter. Next to the pile of dishes. Her legs wrapped around my waist. My tongue ventured into the warmth of her mouth, and her hands wandered my chest.

She wrapped her arms around my neck and ended our kiss. Her head rested on my shoulder and mine on her head. “Those kisses—” Her voice was soft.

I laughed. “I used to think I hated kissing.”

Her eyes rolled as she tilted her head back to look at me. “Tell me anything.”

“What reason do I have to lie?”

She stared at me. Her eyes blinking before she responded, “I guess none.”

I pecked her forehead and said, “Exactly. Here,” I said, helping her off the counter. I didn’t leave from the kitchen though. I asked, “Can I help?”

Her eyes flicked sideways. “You, help me?” She shook her head. “I got it.”

I leaned against the counter as she moved the dishes to the sink. A little peach card sat in the empty space. I narrowed my eyes at the date printed on the bottom. “Tomorrow?”

She looked from me to the card and closed her eyes. “Yeah.”

I only had a few cousins get married. None of my teammates or friends had made that commitment yet. I’d never even been close to thinking about wifing up a girlfriend. And still, the thought of a canceled wedding felt heavy. “Damn.” I looked at her and said, “You should do something to keep your mind off of it.”

“Like what?”

ChapterSeven

Gianna

I thought I’d spend the morning of my wedding in a bridal suite. Holding a glass of champagne while the makeup artist blessed my face. Laughing with my bridesmaids as my stomach churned with excitement.

I had already written my vows. Picked out a gift for Shawn I planned to have my dad deliver to him. A watch he’d been eyeing for a year. A memento to memorialize ourmoment in time.

It would have been perfect. It should have been perfect.
