“As much as this job sucks on many a day, at least we get to see the sun and breathe fresh air.”

“People would think we’re insane for preferring chasing murderers to whatever they do here,” Gonzo said.

“I choose our kind of insanity over working in a cement box any day.”

They’d no sooner parked and emerged from the car than a security officer approached them. “Could I please see your badges?”

They flashed their gold detective shields.

“Right this way.”

The guard led them inside and asked them to surrender their weapons while they were on the premises.

Like Sam, Freddie hated to part with his weapon while on the job, but unless they wanted this trip to be a waste of time, they had no choice but to turn their guns over to security.

After they’d put the contents of their pockets through an X-ray machine and walked through the magnetometer, the security guard said, “Follow me.”

He took them to a bank of elevators and pressed the Up arrow.

Cauley’s office was on the third floor.

The guard pointed to a closed office door. “Here.”

“Thank you,” Freddie said.

“I’ll wait for you by the elevators.”

Freddie knocked on the office door.

“Come in.”

The man inside was younger than Freddie had expected, in his early thirties at most, with brown hair, blue eyes and a face most people would call handsome.

They showed their badges and introduced themselves.

His face registered shock. “What do cops want with me?”

They stepped into the office, closed the door behind them and sat in the chairs in front of his desk, which was neat and orderly, like the man who occupied it.

“Your wife was suing Dr. Marcel Blanchet,” Freddie said.

“Yes, she was.”

“I assume you’re aware of what happened to him and his family.”

“I am,” he said, his expression grave. “I can’t believe he killed his whole family.”

“Why do you say that?” Gonzo asked.

“Isn’t that what happened?” Cauley asked, his gaze darting between them.

“We haven’t established that’s what happened,” Freddie said.

“Oh. Well… We heard he was found with the weapon.”

“Who’d you hear that from?” Freddie asked.

“One of the other people involved in the lawsuit must’ve told my wife. She told me.”
