Once I start trying them on, Aksel wanders away.

I try on a pair of black Louis Vuitton heels with the red sole and all. I’ve never been blessed with the glorious feeling of a perfect heel. I thought I had come close, but nothing compares to this.

“They’re perfect,” I tell the short brunette woman.

“Great! I will box them up.” She grabs the shoes and moves away to the front counter. Aksel speaks to her in soft tones and I can almost see a small amount of his darkness spilling out around him. He’s cast in more shadows. It’s not something I would notice if I didn’t know what he is and what he can do.

I try to listen in, but it’s muffled like there’s a wall between us. Is that part of his powers?

She nods vigorously before wrapping up the shoes and taking his credit card.

He turns to me, holding a hand out towards the door. I head that way, thanking the woman as we go.

“Shouldn’t we have the shoes?” I ask once we get outside and I realize his hands are empty.

“She’s going to drop them off at our car once she processes the order. It should only be a few minutes.”

He has a leisurely pace as he heads to the car.

“Do you not need anything? What about Felix, Blaze, and Griffyn?” I ask.

He told them he would provide a tux for them. Shouldn’t he be following through while we are already out?

“My normal designer already has our measurements and requests. You were the variable this time. Next time, I will be able to place an order for you too. Although, I did quite enjoy the show I received while you tried on dresses, so perhaps not.”

“Was that a joke?” I choke on the words.

Is Aksel being playful?

Seriously, what happened today?

“No.”

“Are you Aksel or have you been body snatched?” I ask seriously.

I examine him, looking for a clue but all I see is the same old Akshole.

“Don’t be ridiculous. I am merely enjoying my day instead of letting you ruin it.”

Well, that’s more like it.

“How often do you have to go to events like this?” I ask, changing the subject.

A dark look crosses his face. “My father likes to show me off like everything I am reflects on how incredible he is, so I’ve been attending them since I was young. When the Alpha Team was formed, they weren’t included in that invite. When we became one of the best teams, the invitation started including their names.”

He sounds annoyed by it all. Does he not agree with their treatment?

“Is that abnormal?” I ask.

Aksel grits his teeth. “It’s not really my story to tell, but I had to convince the director to allow Griffyn on our team. That may have contributed to their lack of invitation. I brought us into the spotlight so we could no longer be ignored.”

He sounds proud of that fact.

“You don’t like these events do you?” I ask, sensing his tone.

He glances at me, weighing me up before responding, “I doubt you’ll like them. It’s all about status and power. Everyone there wants to remind anyone they can that they’re powerful. It’s games and deceit and I have become too good at playing the game.”

“You’ve been more open today than I’ve ever seen you,” I admit.
