An obnoxious announcer explains the rules of the game. It sounds completely ridiculous and pointless.
Anna’s giant smile makes me keep my mouth shut.
She falls asleep on my chest. I pause the show and spend the time watching her instead. Memorizing every detail in case I never get this opportunity again.
My phone buzzes.
Weaver told me you contacted him. I found you that mage, kid. If you want to use him again then you need to do something for me.
Fuck! I was hoping I could go around Nystul and avoid any issues. I didn’t have high hopes.
Nothing is free in this life.
What?I respond.
You fight. I’ll send you the info. After the fight, the weaver will help you.
That’s about what I expected. No way Nystul would pass up the opportunity to use me for a fight. How am I going to get out of this house to go? I don’t want any of them around this seedy crowd, especially not Anna.
Done.
Anna stirs in my arms so I put my phone down.
“Did I fall asleep?”
“Yeah. I paused the show though, don’t worry.”
I decide to try something I’ve seen Felix do. I run my fingers through her hair and push it away from her face. She gives me a sleepy smile in return.
“I can’t believe I fell asleep. I must have been exhausted, and now I’m starving.”
My phone buzzes. I ignore it.
“Let’s go down for food then.”
I stand up first, helping her out of bed. She doesn’t release my hand, instead holding it the entire way downstairs.
She heads to the fridge, but I pull her back.
“Sit. I’ll make you something.”
“Okay,” she responds with a smile.
I make her a sandwich, one of the few things I’m good at.
Her face when she digs in feels like fluttering in my stomach.
Slowly all the guys move from the living room and to the kitchen.
I get it out of the way and say, “My contact came through and we have a weaver.”
“That was quick. Great! What do we need to do?” Anna asks.
“Nothing,” I say shortly.
Anna looks at me like I’m dense and Felix raises an eyebrow.
“Tell us what it is,” Aksel demands.
