I’m tempted to say that Joel and I are going to head back to his place and have some snuggling without any clothes on, but I decide against it.

“Maybe the same thing,” I say lamely.

“On your own?” Clara winks. “I saw the way Anna’s dad was looking at you.”

“He is my boss.”

She sniggers as though she’s in on a juicy secret. “And he’s hot as well. If a guy like him looked at me like that, I’d be getting naked immediately.”

I don’t respond, but I’m surprised at the way I react when I hear Clara talk about Joel like that. I have to fight back the urge to growl like I’m showing that Joel isn't available. But I swallow it back and give Clara a tight smile, glad that she’s looking where she’s going and not at me.

“I’m sure you’re not the only woman who thinks like that.”

“Why Anna’s mom left him, I have no idea. I wouldn’t allow anyone like that go…” Clara stops, tilting her head as she frowns. “Can you hear that? I can hear something strange.”

“What?”

I listen closely. Then I hear it as well. The sounds of moans, both male and female. And the sound of springs. Were they having sex?

“What the heck?”

I follow the sounds and open the door to the grooms’ dressing room. Each of the dressing rooms have small double beds, and this one is occupied. Ashley, one of the bridesmaids, is on her back with her legs pressed up by her shoulders while Eric pummels into her at a speed I didn’t think he could reach. The bed is shaking, the springs squeaking as the bed bangs against the wall. I’m surprised nobody in the ballroom can hear this over the music.

For a moment, I’m completely shocked. Even though Eric isn’t my boyfriend anymore, seeing him pounding another woman is still not what I want to see. And realizing that he is having sex with anyone other than his wife on his wedding day makes my brain feel like it has seized up.

Then I hear a gasp behind me, and I remember that Clara is behind me. That’s when it hits me.

Shit, that’s her sister Eric is banging.

Joel

I see Eric striding back into the ballroom, adjusting his collar and looking like he’s trying to get his composure back. Something about his demeanor sets off something in my head. That and the fact his shirt is untucked and he’s lost his bow tie somewhere. He seems flushed and sweaty, too.

What has he been up to?

Then I recall Megan having left the ballroom with the maid of honor. Oh, God, had they crossed paths? I can feel the discomfort creeping in, but I push it away. Megan hates Eric. There’s no way she would have anything to do with him.

Excusing myself from my brother, I leave the room and look for Megan. It doesn’t take long because I can hear some sobbing coming from the dressing rooms.

I find Megan outside the groom’s room, the door partially open. I’m surprised that I can hear the sobbing all the way down the hall. Megan is leaning against the wall, arms folded as she stares at the floor.

She looks up as I approach and pushes herself off the wall. “Joel? Is something wrong?”

“I saw Eric coming back in, and I wanted to make sure you were okay,” I kiss her head. “What’s happened?”

“It’s a big mess,” she swallows hard.

“Tell me.”

Megan glances toward the door and lowers her voice. “Clara and I were looking for Eric on Anna’s request, and we just found him banging Ashley.”

It takes me a moment to make a sentence out of those words. I stare at her. “What? Eric was cheating on Anna on their wedding day?”

“Yep… And with Clara’s sister,” Megan’s expression is grim. “Eric wasn’t happy about being caught, although he seemed to be angrier at Clara than with me. Clara started screaming at him, swearing and all, and Ashley tried to say that they were in love, but Eric said he just needed someone to get his rocks off.”

I can’t help but wince at that. “Ouch. That’s cruel.”
