“Nick, let it go. I was teasing.” Kenzie had his arm in a death grip.

“You don’t tease about shit like that.”

I observed the two girls in puzzlement. Theo looked like she wanted to strangle her friend.

“Umm, my bad.” She spread her arms.

Kenzie and Theo shared a look. Theo’s said,What are you doing? Kenzie’s said,I’m sorry.

I raised an eyebrow. “Glad we got to the bottom of this mystery.”

“Well, actually—” Kenzie began, and Theo gave her another warning glance.

“Kenz, can you help me with something?” Theo asked, forcing a smile and thumbing at the back door behind her.

“Sure.” She scooted off with her, and I heard them talking in low voices before entering the house.

“What in the fuck was that all about?” Roman scratched his chin, perplexed.

“I don’t know.” I grabbed the mesh bag and gathered up the remaining golf balls. Walking toward the house, I dumped the bag in the giant utility chest on the patio. “I’m hungry.”

I heard Nick mumble behind me, “Axel probably knocked a girl up, that fucker.”

“Nick, give it a rest,” Roman warned. “Your bullshit teasing can go too far sometimes.”

“Who said I was fucking teasing?”

Leaving those two to their stupid conversation, I stepped inside and heard Theo hiss, “Sorina will kill you.”

“I didn’t mean to say anything. It just slipped out,” Kenzie hissed back.

My mind started racing. Why were they talking about Sorina? I entered the kitchen, and both girls smiled brightly, then busied themselves with unloading the dishwasher, arranging dishtowels, opening and closing the empty microwave, wiping down the counter, and any other activity they could come up with to avoid me standing in front of them. “Would you like a sandwich?” Theo asked in a sing-song voice.

“What’s wrong with Sorina?” I asked, reaching out and stopping Kenzie from flitting about like a chicken. Between the two of them, I figured she’d spill.

“Umm, nothing.” She glanced around, avoiding eye contact. I didn’t realize it before, but she was a terrible liar.

“You better tell me now.” I wasn’t playing around. If something was wrong with Sorina, I would raze this fucking campus to set it right. “What’s going on? Tell me before I lose my shit.”

Kenzie closed her eyes and swallowed slowly. “She’s pregnant.”

My heart pounded. “Pregnant?” I eyed Theo, who remained frozen like a statue. Sorina was pregnant? Kenzie and Theo knew this, and she didn’t tell me. Dammit. I needed to see her, but I had to get ready for the game. “I can’t believe she didn’t tell me.”

“Sorina’s pregnant?” Nick’s voice boomed behind me. “Well, shit. I knew Kenzie wasn’t kidding around. It was you.” He shook his head. “Don’t expect me to call you Daddy Dmitri.”

“Shut up, asshole.”

“I think she’s scared,” Theo said quietly. “She probably didn’t know how you’d take it.”

“How I’d take it?” Fuck, Sorina was pregnant with my child. My chest tightened and I had to control my emotions.

“Well, what are you gonna do about it?” Roman slapped me on the back. “Are you finally going to admit there’s something going on with your ward?”

That damn word. I was going to ban it from the house, but first… I took out my phone and sent a text, smiling like a cheese ball.

Me:You’re such a little liar, zaychik, but we’ll work on that after the game.
