“I’m killing anyone that gets in my way.” Her words are soft, like she just announced that she’s going to bake us muffins.

“Alright, Little Mouse. How about we try to just minimize the body count on this date.” She frowns at me.

“You’ve been counting these as dates? And you’re looking at me like I’m insane? Right, hey, Mr. Clean? Gotta gun I can borrow?” Viper mumbles, ‘These fucking women’ as he hands her one.

“You know how to use one?” I cringe at how she’s holding it.

“Point and shot? Can’t be that complicated. You can do it.” For fuck sake.

“Enough, we don’t have time for this. Please don’t shoot Viper or me.” I know once the words are out of my mouth that, I’m tempting fate.

“Relax, I can handle a gun. I am an enforcer, officially, anyway. Had to sit at the table to get my jobs, although my opinion was never heard. MalaSangre trained us well.” I relax just a little, knowing she at least won’t be going in with no training.

“I’ll drive. The entrance is hidden and tricky to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for.” I toss the keys to Viper and open the door for Mercy.

“How far?” Mercy asks, antsy next to me.

“Few miles.” She nods, and I take her hand in mine.

“Almost over now. We get Lucy, we go home. Then I’ll take care of everything else.” She takes a deep breath and nods.

I see smoke in the distance, but before I can ask what it is, Viper floors the gas, and the truck picks up speed.

“What’s going on? Are we being followed?” Mercy glances behind us, not noticing the smoke up ahead of us.

“That’s the house. Hang on!” He turns the truck suddenly, and we go up on two tires monetarily, and I curse.

“NO!” Mercy finally sees the smoke, and then the house comes into view.

It’s engulfed in flames.

“Mercy, call it in. Please stay here.” I beg her as I give her my phone and get out of the truck.

“Viper?” He’s been here, so I’m letting him take the lead.

“Back half of the house hasn’t caught yet. It’s our best beat.” I nod and follow him.

We jog around the house, and he kicks the door in, pulling his gun. I follow suit and carefully watch where we’re going.

“Where would they keep a child?” I ask around a cough.

“Bedrooms upstairs or the safe room in the basement would be my guess.” His coughing is way worse since he has advanced further into the house.

“Here,” I turn towards the whimper, and Viper follows me.

“Where’s Lucy?” I ask the woman holding her side.

When she raises her face, I freeze.

“Lexy?” I crouch in front of her to help, but she pushes me away.

“Save her. Locked in the safe room. Code birthday…” She passes out, and I yell at Viper.

“Whose birthday?” I pick her up and hand her to him.

“The kids?” He suggests, but that doesn’t help.

“Where’s the safe room? You take her out and ask Mercy. I’ll find Lucy.” As if saying her name summoned her, Mercy screams when she sees her sister.
